Ole Miss fans, I have a question (not a troll)...

People on this board keep goofing on Ole Miss about probation and death penalty and blah, blah, blah but looking at the 2017 football depth chart, your starting 22 looks pretty stout. The QB and WRs look fantastic. So do the starting DL (Jones and Speaks should be very tough). There is some talent at LB and DB, too.
The OL looks at least adequate. As injuries mount during the season, do the Rebels have the depth to compete in the SEC particularly on the lines of scrimmage? Thanks.

This should be the best OL Hugh Freeze has fielded.
The offense is gonna score, and the defense is gonna give some points up. I expect an 8-4 season if the team can stay self-motivated.

There isn't a single SEC West team (except maybe State) that cannot beat any other SEC West team on any given day. Ole Miss has a good roster, but so does everyone else. The biggest question marks for the Rebels are:
1. Can their defensive depth survive deep into the 4th quarter (they had a tendency to get worn down late in games last season)
2. Can their sophomore QB develop into a capable passer, not just a game manager.
That's the difference between 4 wins and the coaches packing their bags and pinkslips verses packing their bags for a trip to a NY6 bowl game.
Every team in the division has question marks all over the field. Most every team looks to be adding depth and experience on offense. We've got a wild season of football to look forward to.

Ole Miss has new coordinators pretty much everywhere. The worst issue last season was defense - McGriff has returned for his first DC role and will be using a 4-3 base (opposed to the 4-2-5). LB was the weakest area and will continue to be the weakest area this season with little depth this season.
On offense, the inability to really establish the run was been an issue for years. The OL coach, Luke, is still there, but a completely new OC that has the OL playing with much wider splits (think of Leach's OL schemes). In the previous scheme, the OL never really knew if it was a run or a pass - which certainly helped to explain poor blocking for runs. With the new schema, the OL supposedly will know if they're actually going to be run blocking or not. How that translates into actual on the field results is anyone's guess. A nice surprise is the backup QB, Jordan Ta'amu. Ta'amu was surprisingly accurate and has a very nice deep ball and arm. Jordan Wilkins is back this season at RB, after missing last season due to not having enough credits last year (yeah, an academic adviser screwed up on that), and has the talent to be a very good RB.
Kicking will be rock solid with Gleeson at Punter and Wunderlich at PK/KO.

Our schedule seems to be very favorable as well. Traveling to Cal could be tough. After the bye we go to Bama and then to Auburn. The only other road games we'll have will be @UK on 11/4 and @State to end the year.

Freeze won't be packing his bags anywhere in 2017 with their self-imposed bowl ban.

We have out recruited Arkansas. Why would they have a better shot than us?

Scale of 1-10
Offense:
QB - 9
WR - 8
TE - 5
OL - 8
RB - 6
Passing game should be elite - WRs could be a 9/10 by end of season (still a bit unproven). Running game still a bit questionable with 1 proven runner who was a role player a few years ago.
Ole Miss will likely rank 1 or 2 in total offense in the SEC, partially thanks to the defense giving up a shitload of points quickly, hence getting the ball back to Shea for lots of possessions.

Scheme and depth causes Arky to match up better with other West teams than does Miss St. I can see Arky upsetting teams like Auburn, A&M, and LSU, but not Miss State.
Miss State has a lot of young talent, but they're still rebuilding. I think they'll top Arky next season, but not this season.

We have recruited really well at tight end actually I would put tight end at 8. And running back down to 5 or 4.

Offensive line might be our best unit. Also the only unit that could absorb some injuries. We can't afford significant injuries anywhere else.

Defensive backfield is very talented. Hopefully more mature this year. Linebacker is definitely below SEC standard.

It may be the kind of team that you watch the offense and go get a beer or hotdog while the defense is on the field. If Ole Miss develops an attitude on that defense, this team could be something special.
