Right now I would say either the Honey Badger or Opossum/possum.

After giving this some thought, I'm going with a black bear. Sorry OM.

Generally big and imposing. Potentially threatening when startled but generally harmless. Killed by rednecks. Likes trees.

Tlanuhwa or Thunderbird. They have been spotted in Blount and Knox Cos. as well as where UT campus sits by even the important white leaders (William Blount etc.) who lived in the area and weren't indoctrinated with Native Lore. It's a special type of thunderbird that's native to our area.
