Off season question- Would the SEC be what it is today had UF not hired SOS

in 1990?
When SOS took over the SEC was 3 yards and a cloud of dust. He unlocked the beast that is SEC skill talent. This forced defenses to catch up- the MLB with a 4.75 40 was a dinosaur, D was forced to get much more athletic as well.
I think eventually the Spread would've hit the SEC and we'd be pretty much where we are. But the 25 year reign of terror would be much shorter imo.
I may be biased given SOS's ownage of UGA, but I think he's a top-10 all timer in college football.

Short answer. Yes. Too many great players on the south. Too much fan interest. Eventually it was going to be a juggernaut. The trend was inevitable.

More than likely, yes. A&M would have joined eventually, and just like now, it would support the conference financially

I think the state of Florida as a whole changed Cfb. Miami, Fsu, and Uf had been in over half of the National title games from 80-2010 I'm pretty sure or damn close.

Yes, UF becoming a powerhouse was inevitable because of the population boom in the 70's and 80's. Now, UF may not have been as dominant in the 90s without Spurrier, but they would have been very good.

SS was a game changer but starting back when he was a player. He and then Archie Manning changed the way the QB position was perceived... (though Spurrier also kicked FGs and XPts which is probably what won him the Heisman). BUT he did not change the league from a "cloud of dust" to a run and gun.
Decades before he became coach, Bear Bryant, Johnny Vought, were passing coaches. Even Miss State with Stacy at QB in the 1950s (the best QB at MS ever, bar Dak) could both throw and run. Truth is, in the 1960s the league had been a pro-set league until the advent of the wishbone.
I remember when he was recruited and came to Florida...Ray Graves was coach (bought my folk's house when he moved to Gainesville... cute daughters too). He led the win against Alabama and later the 9-2 season that was the best Florida had ever ever, and I mean ever, had.
Before he became coach the U of F program was a futility. But as coach, it is easy to forget that his defense was always pretty stout and after the Nebraska debacle, he knew the D was the key.
He applied his personal ego-confidence as Heisman QB to the Florida offense. And he just upped the passing ante when the SEC defenses had become almost impossible to run against consistently. But he recruited D players like mad. That is what made the SEC head and shoulders above the rest of the country, and still does.

Tennessee might have gone on a dynasty type of run in the 90s and early 2000s if not for Spurrier.

No it wouldn't. Spurrier dominated the SEC, a run-first defense oriented league, with a passing offense that stretched the field with an accurate QB. This forced the rest of the SEC to change its defensive philosophy. In fact, you can argue the SEC never really did catch up to what Spurrier did at Florida. His 2001 team was one of his best ever, then he left for the NFL. When he got to South Carolina, I don't think he could really get the athletes he did at Florida. Although he did bring South Carolina to 3 straight top ten rankings, something that program has never experienced, he changed his scheme away from the fun n gun.
At the three programs Spurrier coached, he has been the most successful coach there, at least at the time he left. Yes, he is an all time top 10 coach.

Spurrier going to Florida was part of some covert ops =) Bill Arnsparger coached LSU for 3 years in the late 80's, then moved on to become the AD at Florida. Spurrier, at the time was interested in becoming LSU's coach, but Arnsparger "recommended" Mike Archer as his replacement (who was horrible) and got Spurrier to join him in Florida. True story.
