Before Saban got there LSU was irrelevant contrary to what LSU fans will say on here. Les was able to maintain that for awhile but the foundation Saban built eventually started to crumble over time without the "Saban maintenance" factor.
LSU is a good job but nowhere near the level Saban made it. Saban has set LSU fans up for unreal expectations that will probably never be matched again.

That means Saban would be nervous of a potential great coach at LSU? Doubt it. He gets who he wants, when he wants.

If Nick Saban had never come to Alabama, it is likely that Les Miles would be hailed as one of the greatest coaches of his era, and the SEC,hell all college football would have been Pax LSU.
Alabama has everything you need to win big,maybe more so than almost anywhere plus a very football friendly administration. Saban saw this and he has taken advantage.
Over the ages Alabama has won big. Wallace Wade and others in the early era. Of course Paul Bryant. Gene Stallings. Even Dennis Franchione was beginning to build things and would have done very well without the sanctions.
Alabama has everything you need to win big,maybe more so than almost anywhere plus a very football friendly administration. Saban saw this and he has taken advantage.

I don't think Florida would have handled LSU over the long haul, too much competition in Florida for players, even with Urban.

We didn't like Saban leaving and returning to the same conference, and Bama was the best team in our division. Fans typically care about winning championships.

Saban did break LSU. He breaks a lot of programs. It's just the way it is. I don't blame LSU for that; I blame LSU for thinking Ed Orgeron was an upgrade.

I can't even remember the last time we beat Bama. Its been 10+ years I know. I've gave up hope. Just pencil it as a loss. It stops hurting after a while.

With 26 seconds left only needing a FG, he didn't have another play called and let 15 seconds run off the clock with a timeout in his pocket and then ended up using that very timeout with 9 seconds left. Then after a miracle completion he didn't have his FG unit ready to win with a chip-shot and let the clock run out.
Happened again the very next year vs. Tennessee after a clock manager was hired to count for Les.
But yeah, best coach ever.

Very inaccurate.
The 90s was LSU's darkest decade. Prior to 1990, LSU was top 13 in all time win percentage with multiple national titles and multiple conference titles. Hardly "irrelevant."
During the 90s, LSU didn't win shite. Our one bright spot was a 1997 win over top-ranked Florida and Spurrier, who beat us like a drum for years before that. As bad as the 90s were, LSU only dropped to 18th in overall win percentage.
Since Saban, no one will argue LSU has enjoyed an immense amount of success. We're currently up to 12th in all time wins with a few more nattys and conference titles.
There are factors unique to LSU that make it a top 10 coaching job, but a good coach is necessary. Ed Orgeron is not a good coach.

I think this year will make 12 when they beat us.
Also, I'm pretty sure Alabama will face the same problem when Saban retires. Fanbase expectations are a motherfricker. Saban was telling a story awhile back about how some random elderly woman intimated to him that they had a "bad year" because they didn't win it all.
2 losses is now considered a bad year in Alabama. I feel for the guy that has to replace him. If they don't hire someone like Dabo, they're gonna fall on hard times too.

Alabama was the best job in college football before Saban went there. There are other schools with more money but those schools won't pay you as much as Alabama nor give you any and everything you need to win like Alabama will. It takes a coach with a supreme ego to be the HC football coach at Alabama and be successful at it.

Couple of differences:
1) LSU was working off a foundation Saban built in 5 years, Bama is working off a foundation that was already elite and Saban expanded over 11+ years
2) When Saban leaves Bama, it will be to retire, so Bama won't have to compete against him for players and on the field like LSU had to

I'm a Bama fan and I can't believe that some keep saying that LSU was irrelevant before Saban. The period just prior, they were, but not long term. I've said elsewhere that they can make an argument for being the 2nd best SEC program historically. Without question they are top 4 with Bama, UT, UGA. IMO, at least number 3. LSU is probably number 9 or 10 nationally, not an elite program historically, but just below. Assuming they can get some decent University leadership, they will be back.
Every program goes through down times, even the elite. It's usually because of executive and/or administrative leadership: BOT, President, AD. Bama presidents were critically instrumental: George Denny - the concept of football being highly significant to a university, Wade, Thomas; Frank Rose - Bryant; Robert Witt - almost Denny again, Saban.
