Was it really all about Mond? Was Mond going to go elsewhere if A&M signed Stidham? It seems like they were both pretty openly being recruited by A&M for a long time, how did that all of a sudden come up late? What was the deal with Sumlin's involvement (or lack thereof)?
Aggies, I need..........

Probably would have went elsewhere. This is not uncommon, actually it's very common. You saw the qbs who transferred out, because the job wasn't handed to them.

I'm interested as well. Go ahead A&M fans

Auburn bagmen. I don't have any reason to believe this, but I like the narrative.

We decided we wanted Mond more. We already tried having two top QBs under Sumlin and it didn't work out. Auburn benefitted when we went with a longer-term solution.
Before Auburn fans rush in to call bullshite I want to remind everyone that Mond also had an Auburn offer and picked us over them.

That doesn't make any sense though, Stidham should know he ain't being out Johnson.

Someone who follows recruiting more closely can chime in and correct me, but I think the gist is that the staff didn't want to make the same mistake they'd made with Kyler Murray.
They were hesitant to make promises to recruits to try and lure them in that would rock the boat with the guys already committed/on-campus, i.e. exactly what happened with Murray and Allen.
I'd probably wager that Marchiol and Ausbon probably were a factor in wanting to keep Mond happy as well. Plus, Mazzone has been pretty damn high on Mond from day one.

We did want Mond. Stidham is more SEC ready though which is what we needed, so I guess we failed up.
I'm more inclined to believe A&M didn't want Mond to decommit( because the Mond family was adamant about Mond being the only QB in the class) so they just stuck with their current QB.

Mond's dad threw a hissy fit when he found out A&M was after Stidham. That's what the recruiting sites reported

What makes Stidham more SEC ready? No troll. Don't know anything about him.

The story on our end was Mazzone was the one recruiting JS. Mond was coach Swag's choice.

The fact that he played against the better Big 12 teams already and performed well. Gus needed a quick fix and thinks he got it in Stidham.

Did Stidham work out with a QB coach or get any reps any of last season?

FTFY. Great line tho, along with "they may have to hospitalize Sid Bream"

It really was about Mond. Has great potential. AU was definitely on board with recruiting him. aTm has a QB with a big upside in Mond, no doubt. Stidham is going to be good, hopefully.
All that being said, a guy in my office who is NOT an AU fan is talking up Stidham a whole bunch. I have been scorched by the AU has a great QB in the wings talk for waaaay to long. If the narrative holds true, Stidham will come in, throw 4 picks the first game, get hurt by the third quarter, and we see the whirlybird two times in the fourth quarter. FML.
I'll reserve judgement on AU getting a great QB hype. I will feel better if we just recruit a washed up JUCO db and run the read option like a magician.

Exactly. Add in the fact that Mond was key to getting other kids from IMG in this class and the choice was easy for us.
Win-win for all concerned as these things go.
