The SEC will be one 12-team basketball league beginning in the 2011-12 season.

The conference's athletic directors approved a recommendation from SEC coaches Wednesday that they scrap the current, football-based two-division, six-team East-West split at the league's annual spring meetings in Destin, Fla.

Calipari claims this will help the SEC get 8 teams in the NCAA tourney. How? I haven't the slightest idea.

How the standings would have looked this year if there were no divisions.

1. Florida
2. Alabama
3. Kentucky
4. Vanderbilt
5. Georgia
6. Mississippi State
7. Tennessee
8. Ole Miss
9. Arkansas
10. South Carolina
11. Auburn
12. LSU

maybe because the RPI's in the West will be higher? Giving them a better chance to get a bid?

I like it. Are we still going to play 16 games per year SEC wise or more?

It is still division teams twice and everyone from the other division once.

How is that going to improve RPI then?

It's all about perception from what I can tell.

That will be just for this year because it is too late to adjust the in and out of conference schedules. They are discussing going to an 18 or 22 game schedule after the 11-12 season.

I think I like it. At least, after this past year, where Bama got snubbed because they played in the "weak" western division. Now, the media can't decide that one division is crap, and despite any evidence to the contrary, be biased about it and create a perception that hurts a team come selection time.

Also, it will be kind of cool playing UK, Vandy, UF, etc. twice some years.

22 game SEC schedule? Are you serious? I dont see that happening. I'd be against it, but don't mind 18 conference games.

Too bad you dont get a vote Al- they will go to at least an 18 game schedule- they are forming a committee to draw up proposals for 2012-2013 season

I'm 100% for 18 SEC games but there isn't a major conference who plays more than 18. No need to even look at 22 SEC games.

The move to 22 is being discussed because it would eliminate some of the meaningless games like Valley, Belmont, Jacksonville St and the like and give the SEC a big RPI boost
