Meh. Any agent worth his salt could add an addendum to a contract that allows a release in the event of NCAA complication.

But why would a coach start at a new place, even with that in his contract, if potential doom was coming?

Disagree. Programs facing sanctions get decent coaches all the time. The lowered expectations mesh well with the lower threshold for the love and support of the fanbase if you do even marginally well. Penn State had no trouble getting Franklin, and he was one of the hottest coaches around at the time after turning Vandy into a perennial 9 win team. Miami did fine. USC got Kiffin, one of their top choices. Hell, even the horrible run of Bama coaches had some pretty decent bona fides on their resumes. Sanctions are temporary. The chance to be a hero in 3-4 years? Worth the temporary inconvenience to a lot of good coaches.

I thought Penn was Franklin's dream coaching job? Makes a bit of a difference.
