Directly from one of the local Springfield, MO newspaper guys who posts on the Mizzou rivals site:

citizenpaper:

Not looking to drop a thread to seek fire and brimstone; however, heard info on the QB situation from a very reliable source this weekend regarding Maty Mauk, Drew Lock and Mizzou's future at the position.

Per my source, it's predetermined that Mauk will graduate in December and will transfer from the program soon thereafter. My source tells me the staff is fully aware of this and, in many ways, is supportive of this decision.

Per my source, Lock exceeded all expectations and blew the staff's mind with his high learning curve once arriving on campus. I'm told the young receiving corps gels nicely with Lock and that he's a natural leader in all facets. I'm told that in many practices, it is Drew Lock who sets the bar for QB expectations, a scenario also noticed by Maty Mauk.

Finally, I'm told the decision to pull the redshirt was made very early, which prompted Mauk to tell the staff of his future intentions after Mauk was told Lock would play a minimum of once series in EVERY game this season, with no exceptions.

Initially, I questioned the rumor, but I suppose it does make sense. In fact, Maty Mauk's older brother, Ben, found himself in the same situation at Wake Forest, then transferred to Cincinnati, where he had a fine senior season after being deposed as the starter at Wake.

Edit: Follow up post

"Other normally well informed poster said:
I heard he wanted to transfer this summer but the staff promised him the job if he'd stay."

citizenpaper:

I was told the exact same thing.

Heard Maty was told Lock would be playing this fall very early, which wasn't greeted with favor by the entire Mauk clan

One thing I do know. Mizzou had better recruit one or two QB's.

Is Lock that good or Mauk just underwhelming?

Both. Mauk just goes "pin head" at least once per game. He won't go to a QB guru. Insists that his brother coach him.

Lock looked super smooth to me on Saturday. But he's a freshman. I remember A&M's Kenny Thrill too.

Future first rounder. At the Elite 11 Trent Dilfer said he was one of the best Pocket Passing QB prospects he'd ever seen.

It doesn't sound like Mauk is 100% committed. Why continue to give him snaps?

IF any of this is true, then it answers a couple of questions:

Why they pulled Lock's redshirt
Why either Prinz or Zanders hasn't left

Yes.

Lock was the best QB in camp, no question, and by pretty much every measurable. Lock is Mizzou's next QB. Mauk is the starter right now, probably because of his experience. And, he's a winner, we have a good record under him.

From appearances, Mauk continues to have some of the same issues he had 2 years ago, and they haven't resolved. By now, you have to think it's not going to change. He's good, but continues to make some boneheaded plays/mistakes that he shouldn't. They haven't said this, but I think his dad (who was his HS coach) is still involved. Maybe too much.

I like Mauk. He's got a lot of skills, does good things, and has been great for the program. He's also tough - played through a shoulder injury most of last season. But Lock is the future.

Pinkel is loyal to a fault. He will not bench Mauk unless we begin to lose games because of his play. Mauk is the starter, and Pinkel will stick with him as long as we win.

Also, until last Saturday, the last time Lock was in a game was HS. Pinkel isn't going to put a true freshman into SEC play as a starter when there is an experienced option who wins. He will let him build experience and coach him up. If Mauk gets hurt, Lock is ready. And if this rumor is true, it's exactly Pinkel's MO - the "heir apparent" shadows the QB and gets snaps.

Agree with other posters here. IF this is true (I have my doubts) then there is absolutely no reason to be starting Mauk at this point. Just go ahead and get the Lock era started.

I also highly doubt fratty Mauk is graduating early.

I call BS on all this.
Let's see, Mauk has led Mizzou to 2 sec champ game appearances, the new guy has played one game against a nobody team.
Mauk is the guy until he gets hurt.

You might be right, Pinkel is VERY loyal. But from everything reporters, scribes, etc have said- Lock is the best they have ever seen at Mizzou. That list would include Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, Blaine Gabbert, and Mauk,

SIAP (haven't read whole thread) but the PowerMizzou Rivals site reporter, Gabe DeArmond, replied to this that he hasn't heard any such rumors and he strongly believes this rumor is not true.

When Gabe has heard smoke but can't reveal anything, he usually posts some wishy washy vague stuff. When he comes out and flat out says "I haven't heard that and it sounds like a load of BS", like he is in this case, it usually winds being BS.

OK, you're the head coach. You have an incredibly talented kid who is the future, but astro-turf green at this point. And you have an experienced starter who has led your team to 2 division championships. As long as Mauk's attitude is good, I start him and let Lock get experience throughout the season, coach him up. The minute the attitude changes, I make a change. That's just me though.
