I'm sure Auburn is the only school guilty of doing this. The rest of us are squeaky clean, I wager.

Pretty sure SEC schools have to maintain their accreditation to remain the SEC, losing their accreditation means losing their place in the conference, so yeah, the accusation is kinda a big deal.

Would love to see the NCAA try to prove this.

The issue isn't the major. There are other rules from SACS about athletic departments tampering with the academic side. Basically, the question here is if the AD is pressuring the university into giving its student-athletes an unethically easy route. The AD offering to subsidize the major is the part that's really under review, I would imagine. SACS might see that as a bribe.

I mean that is probably as far as this will go. This isn't a grade changing scandal or even a cheating one. Hell we all laugh at the major of the "scholar athletes " they show on each broadcast most the time from all the schools. That is why it is so much more impressive when you see a smart athlete in a real tough major.

An Auburn dean says his recommendation to keep the public administration program alive in the face of closure in 2013 was not influenced by athletics.
Joseph Aistrup, the dean at the College of Liberal Arts, told AL.com three factors influenced his request to provost Timothy Boosinger to keep the program afloat amid uncertainty, and none of those reasons had to do with the influx of athletes in the classroom.
"As the new dean, I was willing to provide the necessary resources to continue this major," Aistrup told AL.com in an email Thursday. "I had a meeting with the new chair of political science and the program director of public administration. At that meeting, I asked if hiring a lecturer in political science would help to alleviate the burden. They indicated it would, and thus supported continuing the program."
Aistrup was hired away from Kansas State University and started his appointment Sept. 1, several months after the athletics department expressed the desire to keep the program alive and also offered to subsidize the program, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The AD offered to pay for a visiting scholar to relieve the workload of the PS Dept (the excuse used for dropping the program). This wasn't a bribe and the AD made the offer so it would not disrupt any of the athletes course track. You do not see any great reporters interviewing non-athletes in the curriculum to see if these were crip courses. You all are getting your hopes up if you think this leads to anything.
