My Takeaways From LSU Last Night

1. The defense is still fast and physical, especially in the secondary. Orgeron has made an impact already in the front 4. They were much more aggressive than they have been since 2011.
2. The LB core is legit. Beckwith is one of the best ILB's in the conference. Louis and Jones are both very good. This is the best the unit has been in a long, long time.
3. Davon Godchaux is the most underrated defensive lineman in the league.
4. Steele is NOT an upgrade IMO, but Orgeron is by leaps and bounds, as I've already said.
5. Harris looked better than the stat line shows. He made some good throws, but had a couple called back. However, it's pretty clear that Miles didn't trust him to make a play when it was needed early in the 4th quarter. That's going to have to change if this team is going to win more than 8 or 9 games IMO.
6. LSU's offense is still way too conservative when they get a lead. That game should have been over before halftime, but a few plays got called back due to penalties. Rather than putting their foot on MSU's throat after taking a 2 score lead early in the 3rd, they went into a shell and tried to run out 25 minutes of clock.
7. Sloppy penalties killed LSU on offense last night. That's the sort of thing that should get worked out, hopefully.
8. Leonard Fournette is pretty good.

If Les doesn't open it up for Harris we are going to lose a few games like last year because every SEC team will still be in the game in the fourth quarter. You can't win all of those.
That said, those penalties really hurt us when we were in the process of blowing the game open.

I agree. He's a great #2 and an absolute bruiser.

I'm very surprised Miles didn't give Harris the confidence we all thought he would. You can look at the "win" as a win, but once we are up against better competition, we very well will be in trouble.
Sad to say, but I was praying we'd go for it on that last 4th and 1-2yds b/c everyone knew Dak was going to make a last ditch run for the win. Almost bit us.

I like what I saw from the offense. Les literally gave Muschamp 12 passing plays to take look over.

If Guice is in the game, sell out to defend a swing pass.

Yeah not taking away anything from him, but LF is a beast.

LSU looked just like LSU. They played really well but for some reason the other team came back. It's really a weird phenomenon to explain.

You left out..
Their fans want Les Miles' head for winning a game on the road against a ranked opponent in the first game of the year with a new DC, and a new QB...

Did you watch the game in regards to defense? Yes they were an impact early but there is no depth in the front 7 and it showed. That OL you played is what you saw in the 1st half....then in 2nd half your front 7 got gassed and could not get pressure without bringing a blitz. That exposed your secondary and you made Dak look like Peyton Manning 2.0.
Long story short either your front 7 needs to work on conditioning or some roll players step up and contribute. If not your team will not win against better competition (ie. A team with a good OL).

I told Mrs. Pimp after the first half that watching LSU play didn't feel tedious anymore. They came out in the 2nd half and had that awesome early physical drive. And then things got really tedious again.
I feel like Les lost his nerve when he went up 21-6. I'd like to believe it was because he wanted to ease Harris into his first real game. But it may be that he's so congenitally afraid of losing that he will continue to go silly-conservative, even when Harris demonstrates he can run the offense at full speed for 60 minutes.
There were no turnovers.Fournette is absolutely once-in-a-generation-BEASTLY.The OL is huge and strong and deep. LSU has some scary good true freshman. They have a lot more speed at the DE position. Godchaux was dominant. Dak Prescott didn't beat them deep. They completely bottled up the run, and held it to dink and dunk . Having two touchdowns called back really changed the complexion of the game, particularly the Dural run. Had that stood, the margin would have been dominant.
Also-MSU is good enough to pull the upset of anybody in the league, particularly at home. I'm putting Alabama on upset alert. They are going to beat somebody better than them.
