My initial impression of Tennessee as a school and fanbase was comically wrong

There's been a lot of talk about the UT/Bama rivalry being "properly renewed this week", and some LSU fans profess to be surprised at the intensity of this rivalry. I actually knew about the UT/Bama rivalry from my old job. I had two coworkers who lived in "Birmingum" (as they called it - I fricking HATE that southern accent that has them good ole baws pronounce "Birmingham" as "Birmingum" - like nails on a chalkboard to me) and both were Vols fans and HATED Bama with a passion. Like way more than I as an LSU alum hated Bama.
Anyways, the reason it stuck out to me is that for some reason (maybe b/c of Peyton Manning who I always viewed as a bit provincial coming from the Garden District and Newman and NOLA society) actually CHOSE to go to Tennessee, so in my head as a 15 year-old (at the time) I assumed this meant that they were this aristocratic, Vandy-lite kind of school that just happened to be solid at football at well. And in a certain light, their colors and stadium and band and uniforms seemed like they were a bit upper class.
Now in hindsight I obviously know what dumb, yellow-toothed, spit cup-holding rednecks the majority of their fanbase are and it all seems ridiculous. With the advent of camouflage NCAA merchandise that awful orange is rendered as the redneck/tacky shade of abortion that is actually is. I remain amazed to this day that I once viewed the University of Tennessee fans and program as anything but utter Appalachian (or I suppose it's the Smokies?) poors. I can't believe that Lane Kiffin's wife survived in "Knoxvul" (as the indigenous call it) for 6 entire months.
All that's missing is a dip cup, trashy goatee, and camouflage UT cap. Oh wait, he has a trashy goatee. And the dip cup is probably down by his awful Justin boots.

Is this another thread started by an LSU fan about a rivalry that he supposedly doesn't care about?

Your fake conservatism on the poli board is better than this crap.

Strong work, very well written. The key to a piece such as this is subtlty, keeping your readers wondering where the post is going until the conclusion. Masterful job.

So many words. So few shits to give.

Okay, so you're just stupid.

I'm confused by all of you lsu fans dogging tenner this week. it's like you want a rivalry with tenner so you could show bama how it's really done. another chance to prove your worth over bama perhaps?

For me, I want LSU to get more cracks at Tennessee while they're down. Why should Bama get all the fun?

wut
Birmingum is how an Englishman would pronounce it.
Good ol' baws would say Buhmminhayam.

I chuckled.
My only interaction with 10rc fans outside of this forum was at the game where Junior and Lulu became famous. Vols fans were very cocky that day as they were ranked #2 and had already given LSU one of our 3 conference losses that season. I remember Vols fans trash talking us all day leading up to kickoff. They took a 17-10 lead at halftime after knocking both Rohan Davey and LaBrandon Toefield out of the game.
Vols fans were so confident they were going to Pasadena.
And then the 4th quarter happened...
By the way, Steve Shaw was referee for that game. The REC was on our side that day.

Great post. The only thing I don't agree with is the accent part. There's nothing more annoying the the westbank/Jeff parish female accent. Especially when she's pissed.

CC, you travel for your job, right? How can you not find the Minnesota/Wisconsin singy-songy Scandinavian sounding shite the worst thing in the world?
If Sofia Vergara was naked on my bed and exclaimed, "Oh Yah, give it to me!" in that unfortunate dialect, I think my dick might develop multiple personality disorder.
