He encouraged Mesquite West HS QB Chason Virgil to graduate early. He is now 16 days from graduation.

Mullen now has pulled the offer to let the kid fend for himself.

Mesquite West coach Jeff Neill :
@neill_jeff: Miss St. pulls scholarship from our QB Chason Virgil w/16 days til graduation. Classless move by "coach" Dan Mullen

Either Mullen likes to turn off the entire state of Texas or he is stalling Virgil for an impending move to Florida.

For every kid with a scholarship pulled prior to signing day, a kid decommits from that same team with no warning. It goes both ways.

Look up Kiffin and Carroll flat out having the kid lie to the school to tie up scholarships while the kid fully intends to sign elsewhere.

It's a dirty business.

Just a part of recruiting... sucks for the kid though.

These football programs have the right to do what's in their best interest.

Mullen got the kid going academically and made him feel good about himself up until 16 days before graduating. Then gave him an important life lesson.

Seems like Mullen really did a lot for him, and he is getting slammed.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for the kid? I'm sure he has dozens of other offers.

We are supposed to pretend that we care about the football players and that they are student athletes.

He's a QB that committed 7 months ago. He had some big time offers but those have fulfilled their QB quota now.

As Florida's coach, he will offer a scholarship next week.

He gone? Did anybody take College English here?

Does it indicate why Mullen did it?

Yeah, you are. He's still a kid and even if he has lots of offers, how many of the other schools he liked moved on while he's been committed to MSU?

With that said, it's a coach's responsibility to take kids who are going to make a difference on the team, and taking a kid you no longer think will do that is a bad move.

I am assuming that Mullen thought that this move would end up making the football team better overall. That's his job...to put out the best product he can. Sucks for Virgil...but I would be lying if I said I actually care.

Good thing Mullen isn't leaving to coach in Texas. Florida will have plenty of talent for him to pull in.

there has to be more to this story.

However, it sucks that Mullen can't comment on him or the rationale behind this.

Don't blame him for wanting to get away from soft Texas kids.
