Mississippi is second in the nation behind South Carolina for percentage of residents that are African American. I think MSU is around 23%, which is highest in the SEC.

Her winning in a landslide is a good step forward for racial reconciliation in our state. We actually had our first black homecoming queen when I was in school in the 90s. There weren't any protests or anything, but thank goodness social media didn't exist.

And? She's a pretty girl. I guess it's a thread because she's black? Regardless, congrats to her.

No one ignores it, but it's completely irrelevant ITT.

An SEC school electing a black homecoming queen doesn't happen all the time.
So is this the football fan equivalent of having a black friend?

Oh just STFU. You're part of the problem, not the solution. Everyone is quite aware of things that happened in the past. Shall we dwell on any and all atrocities our forefathers did to spite the progress that has been made? Seems like insanity to me and a great way to regress.

Alabama has been electing black homecoming queens since the 70's.

Ignore what? You seem angry a black girl was elected homecoming queen at MSU, and you're trying to pull the conversation back towards "well bad things happened in the past, so they're just doing this for publicity". You seem like you have a narrative you want to champion and will do what it takes to keep it going.

Because The University of Alabama actually is working to change their culture. Kudos.

Can't believe any school in the South, especially Mississippi would vote any non white girl as HQ.

Really? I know Alabama has had a handful of black homecoming queens. 7 if I remember correctly. I'm sure most SEC schools have had multiple non-white homecoming queens.

I was shocked a black girl would be given a fair chance at a school in the South, yes. I was being complimentary of MSU.

And no one outside of Starkville cares. I don't get why people make such a big deal about race.

The good old days when the goal was to be color blind, do the right thing and treat everyone the same- it’s a crying shame how it’s been twisted now. Look no further than a few commenters in this thread to see whats happened to the USA.

That's the problem. Why be colorblind? Why not acknowledge and embrace our racial and cultural differences? Why try and pretend that we're all the same when we all have a unique background.
