Taking final AP Poll points since 2001 and subtracting the Preseason AP Poll points during that same time frame. What does that look like?
Ranked from mover underrated to most overrated:
1. Alabama +41
2. Missouri +33
3. Ole Miss +21
4. Miss. St. +14
5. Vanderbilt +5
6. Auburn -3
6. S. Carolina -3
6. Arkansas -3
9. Texas A&M -19
10. LSU -38
11. Tennessee -46
12. Georgia -47
13. Florida -84
*Kentucky has not appeared in any Preseason or Final AP Polls.
Florida has been the most overrated program during the preseason of the past 15 years.
Alabama's "underrated-ness" is due to the fact that they've finished seasons so well in the past few years. That next group... Missouri, Ole Mis, & Mississippi State... are more likely to be "underrated" because their programs don't get that much respect in the first place. Not enough to often be ranked in the preseason.
Here is how the SEC "Preseason Rankings" look during the past 15 years:
#1 LSU- 244
#2 Georgia- 213
#3 Florida- 206
#4 Alabama- 169
#5 Auburn- 132
#6 Tennessee- 111
#7 S. Carolina- 77
#8 Texas A&M- 55
#9 Arkansas- 49
#10 Missouri- 37
#11 Ole Miss- 35
#12 Mississippi State- 12
*Kentucky and Vandy have not appeared in any preseason AP Polls
Here is how the SEC teams rank in terms of FINAL AP polls the last 15 years:
#1 Alabama- 210
#2 LSU- 206
#3 Georgia- 166
#4 Florida- 143
#5 Auburn- 129
#6 S. Carolina- 74
#7 Missouri- 70
#8 Tennessee- 65
#9 Ole Miss- 56
#10 Arkansas- 46
#11 Texas A&M- 36
#12 Mississippi St.- 26
#13 Vanderbilt- 5
*Kentucky has not been rated in any Final AP Polls since 2001.

It's truly amazing how much media bias Alabama has to overcome. Just imagine Alabama's dominance if the media weren't such haters.

Surprised Mizzou did so well. I knew we've always been underrated, but we didn't start playing great football till 07.

It's a good thing for us this doesn't go back to 2000. We started out #3 but went 3-8.

08 killed us. Going from preseason #1 to not ranked.

Makes sense. No doubt we get preferential preseason treatment.

Would be curious where the last ten years only put us relative to this. In large part sums up why Richt is no longer here. Failure to meet our live up to expectations.
