I just read ( I know, germans germans) about mississippi state going to UMass in the future, and it got me thinking about the most random foes sec teams have had to travel to. What are some ones you guys can remember? By "random" I mean the home team is widely regarded as lowly, perhaps even a full on creampuff, or a team that is relatively small/small fanbase.

I didn't forsee LSU ever traveling to play Syracuse in the Carrier Dome...

...but in hindsight it makes sense, because of the New York media market.

We went.

I still picture Dwight Freeney destroying our QBs.

I'd say Mizzou at Toledo, but Pinkel worked there.

Under Saban, the oddest road game (hasn't been many) was at Duke a few years back.

We played SMU in Shreveport back in the 90s under Ford.

Highlight of the game was Arkansas scoring and Ford opting to go for two because he thought it was third down, he didn't realize a TD was scored the play prior.

But Ford was no scientific rocket.

It was a home and home, of which I believe the original agreement was to play Duke in Charlotte. But it fell through. Saban would have never agreed to a home and home with Duke. Was done under Shula.

Living in Mobile it was weird seeing MSU fans in downtown after the game. It was almost like a "did you have a practice session" camp in Mobile. Don't get me wrong, it was great for an upstart program like USA but it was weird seeing MSU people "tailgating" in midtown Mobile.

Not really that random, close proximity to one another and both see themselves as rivals with Memphis State.

Western Kentucky, played in Nashville. It was a two-for-one deal with them.

Wow, I had to go back and check our schedules, because I didn't remember any trips to mid-major schools by AU in recent years. Turns out, there haven't been any.

Unless you want to call playing road games against weaker teams in traditional AQ conferences like Syracuse in 2001, Virginia in '97, or TCU (while in the South West Conference) in '80 the only "creampuffs" we have played on the road in the last five decades were Memphis State in 1976 and Houston in 1963.

I seem to recall Bama taking a bunch of trips in the early '90s that seemed beneath them - like Tulane and Southeast Louisiana - but I figured those were Bill Curry/Steve Sloan deals, and can be dismissed for temporary insanity...

If you're smart, you're scared to go near Legion Field.

Place is a hole.
