Actually the change took time. In 1970 when USCw beat Alabama, USC had 18 black players on their roster (Alabama had already recruited one, Wilbur Jackson).
10 years later in the 1980 Sugar Bowl against Arkansas, Alabama won the NC with exactly 18 black players on their roster.
