Missouri's Recruiting Strategy in the SEC

Any Mizzou fans want to chime in with what they think Pinkel's recruiting strategy is and what it should be? Looking at the recruiting class its around 11 Missouri kids, less than a handful from Texas and one each from states like Kansas, Illinois, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama
Do I correctly understand Pinkel's primary out of state recruiting target to be Georgia? If so then I think Missouri needs to rapidly readjust their recruiting philosophy. They used to rely on good evaluation and a moderate presence (playing several games a year against teams from Texas/Oklahoma) in Texas to pick up the Texas kids others overlooked. That seems a lot less viable of an option for them after leaving the Big 12.
They seem to have targeted Georgia as their "replacement Texas" but I'm really not sure that's going to work out for them. They are competing against a boatload of other schools with closer proximity and bigger football names. Rather than targeting Georgia I think they should:
1) work very hard to maintain their state presence by playing regular games in STL and KC and
2) seek out ways of raising their presence in other semi-regional recruiting areas like Memphis and Chicago.

We need to be recruiting neighboring states and still try to get who we can from FL and GA. What his actual plan is though? After yesterday none of us could tell you. The man has never been a good recruiter, but this is just ridiculous. And sadly, I expect this trend to continue under him.

Agreed Stripes, luckily we will probably only see one more recruiting cycle out of him. HE GONE after next season's epic failure that is coming our way.

Personally, I think Pinkel is on the way out, too. I just can't see him succeeding (read: surviving) given how things have gone so far since joining the SEC.
I assume this is something that has been discussed among Missouri fans: who might you target when Pinkel is shown the door? Do any attractive coaches have ties to Missouri? Will your AD shell out the cash to attract a top hire? Just wondering.

I've been preaching this since they joined the conference. When their fan base said they would just walk into Georgia and still recruit Tejas I said we shall see on signing day. Here we are..
They need to lock down Missouri, steal from Illinois, and pick what they can from Tejas and the deep southeast (which won't be easy).
What hurts Missouri is location from Tejas and Georgia. They need a younger more energetic coaching staff that can go into these areas, listed above, and pull recruits to Missouri.

From stltoday.com
Pinkel: Low ranking for recruits unimportant
If Pinkel has these great relationships with Texas coaches, I think that he would be well-served to schedule a home and away with someone like SMU or Houston and keep recruiting Texas hard. Just my two cents.
Pinkel: Low ranking for recruits unimportant

Although he signed only one player each from Florida and Georgia, Pinkel was not disappointed in the geographic diversity in terms of recruiting SEC territory.
He said getting a foothold in Texas when he first arrived at Mizzou took time. He started with four coaches assigned to Texas and ended up with seven. During this recruiting process, he had one in Georgia, two in Florida and three in Texas. Those numbers could be adjusted, he added.
“It’s a transition period, like when we got into Texas,” he said. “We ended up with 30 players on our team from Texas. It wasn’t like that 10 years ago. We went in and nobody even knew us. It’s about building relationships.”

Will be tough for Mizzou since AU and Vandy have both had success recruiting from Georgia lately.

They better do something like this as Arkansas and Texas A&M are making it well known for the next 10 years in Dallas.
Hurting OU, OSU and Texas is a win for both of these old programs.

Going to have to start paying players like the rest of us. Sorry.

Radio host down here mentioned that. Mizzou better step their game up. Their recruiting reminds me of the other Big 12 schools.
Football talent in Missouri is nowhere good as it is down south.
Webb City, Missouri won 3 state titles in a row, had an undefeated team the last 2yrs and not even ranked in the Top 100 for rivals, WOW. And this is a 4a school. Hmmm.

Between having home games in Little Rock and Dallas, Arkansas students are getting screwed.

does he though?
He's had a few noteworthy players in the past like Chase Daniels but will they compete favorably when they are going to get the leftovers after: A&M, OU, Texas, LSU, Alabama, Ok State, Arkansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, etc have their fill first.
All of those schools are closer than Missouri to the Texas kids and the families they are recruiting.

There is a lot of talent in Illinois. They should recruit there a lot better as they can sell those kids the SEC.

Arkansas has a large Alumni presence in Dallas and fans who work in Texas because of proximity to Arkansas. With the new stadium expansion announced Little Rock is on it's way out or she might still hold one game a year.
As a student I would've loved to to have travel to Dallas to visit friends and catch the rest of the games on the Hill. Little Rock, she just isn't feasible much longer in her current form and rotation.

Kige that
They should be recruiting Illinois (by playing games in STL and Chicago) and Memphis before Texas and Georgia.
They should do their best to lock down the Missouri talent best they can and reach out to the more regional talent hubs - especially in Illinois they should stand out as the SEC option not that far from home.

Definitely - annually they need about 12 from Missouri, 6 from Illinois, and a few from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas plus their neighboring states (Iowa, Kansas, etc).
Schedule home and homes with UH, Rice, SMU and Tulane.
IMO Their targeting of Georgia is a mistake - too far and too much strong competition for talent there.

I have no idea what they're really doing, if anything. They said they were shifting some emphasis to Florida and Georgia. They continued a presence in Texas and did a decent, not great, job of keeping the Missouri kids home. My thoughts are they need to:
1. Continue to keep Missouri kids home.
2. Continue their presence in Texas.
3. More emphasis on surrounding states. For many, Mizzou offes the option of being the closest school to play in the SEC.
4. They do have to have a presence in Florida/Georgia, but hire someone with ties/experience there.
Unfortunately, they only signed 20 kids. Some decent talent among those kids, but just not enough numbers. Only 2 from surrounding states but Augusta (IL)and Rhodes (KS)will be solid. Unfortunately, he lost an OL commit from IA that will be solid. If we would have been able to keep him, flip Elliott and land Outlaw (Former UF commit now signed with Tx Tech), our class would have looked a lot different.

The top players can play. The problem in Missouri is there's no depth in numbers of high school kids that are at that level.

A few misconceptions around here:
1) Mizzou never got high level talent out of Texas. We never beat Texas, A&M, OU or oSu for kids coming out of Texas. Mizzou's success in Texas came from kids like Sean Weatherspoon, Chase Daniel, Danario Alexander, etc. Spoon and Danario were 2 star kids no one in texas wanted. Pinkel's staff does well at combing the small schools, evaluating based on tape and workouts, and signing kids they could develop.
2) Don't assume Pinkel and Co will be shooting for the same kids as everyone else in Atlanta and the rest of GA. Pinkel's staff will spend most of their time combing the small schools for talent other schools aren't interested in. Pinkel doesn't try to go up against the big boys that often because it is mostly a waste of time. See the Culkin kid we signed from FL last year. Kid is a freak that apparently nobody knew about.
Pinkel does well at finding talent and developing it. What he struggles with is coaching and philosophy.
In the end, the more Mizzou wins, the higher the rankings of the recruits Mizzou gets. Will that mean Mizzou is signing higher quality kids or will that mean that services respect Mizzou's evaluation process more? Who knows.
