Miss State Fans- What was the issue on O vs Auburn?

I haven't had a chance to watch the game yet. Were there untimely turnovers, was the O just not flowing, or did Auburn's D just play well?
I'm expecting a great game at A&M on Saturday, but MSU is going to have to double their output (points wise) to beat A&M, IMO.

They went in with a "Les Miles" plan, don't show much because you already won before kickoff.

Time of possession was MSU-23 min, Auburn-37 min.
mix that with dan's conservatism after leading at the half and you've got a pretty bland 3&4 quarter. seems to work for him, though. saw somebody say he's 42-1 after leading at the half or something to that extent. by no means should you quote me on that though

Once we hit 14 Merlins knew it was over.

Pretty much.
MSU knew Gus had no idea what he was doing and didn't do much because they didn't have to. Just do what it takes and move on in this league.
They also had 2 or 3 drives killed by easy dropped passes.

I realize you've gotten at least 3 dumbass responses so far, so let me help...
Auburn actually played pretty well on defense and MSU had trouble sustaining long drives, especially throughout the second half. Muschamp appeared to have a good gameplan for them. Dak is extremely dangerous, though.

I know Dak's going to get his yards in the air. I'm mostly worried about him scrambling after over pursuits by our DE's.

Can't help you there... we couldn't even make him scramble.

That can definitely happen with him. Luckily we seemed prepared enough to prevent most big running plays involving him from happening. If you guys play contain and blitz a linebacker every once in a while, he'll have a hard time running it. He's a dangerous passer, too, though.

One Turnover for MSU. Very conservative in second half with a 14-0 lead. That being said, MSU is not a very good team (which means we suck). Would be surprised if they win many more SEC games.

State played a D quality game and still was up by two scores for most of the game. There was no threat of losing.

Auburn kept a LB as a spy on Dak the entire game and we decided to pass rather than run.

Issue was that Auburn is better but did not capitalize in the redzone. Don't worry, we'll have it straightened out in time to beat a&m

Yeah, State used those pesky rules against AUburn & called a timeout after the idiots showed they ;-) hand.

It was a combination of Auburn being decent plus MSU just being conservative because Auburn was not really much of a threat to score a TD.
There was one drive with 4th and 2 at the Auburn 44 where Mullen punted. Another that was 4th and 5 at the Auburn 40 where Mullen punted. Against a team with a more potent offense Mullen would have gone for it.

quote:This - Mullen went ultra conservative once they went up 2 TD's. There was no point in trying anything too risky because AU had already shown their hand on offense. AU's redzone offense has been broken for a while.

State fans wont admit it but so far our offense has just been very average. Until we prove that we can run the ball, it will remain that way. We have a great receiving corp. We dont have a true SEC running back getting meaningful carries. We arent being aggressive running the ball with dak so far. Its as simple as that. Is it because the o line cant run block? Possibly. They can pass block though. Is dak actually injured? Possibly. Who knows.
Then you factor in this "bend dont break defense" coupled with heavy passing and we dont have the ball very much.

Yeah so far the strength has been the defense which is unexpected.
As far as the Auburn game I think Mullen could have put a few more points on the board if he had gone for it instead of punting.

Manny held the d back and kept everything in front of them in hopes that White would make mistakes. It worked, but auburn was able to move the ball some and kept dak off the field. First drive of the second half, dak converts on 4th and 3 to get the ball down to Aubie's 33 but the receiver fumbles, and auburn gets the ball at the 44. Aubie got a field goal off of that so that turnover was a 6-10 point swing in Aubie's favor.
