In 1998 Tennessee, Arkansas, UCLA, K-State, and FSU were among the teams fighting for a shot to the first BCS title game, sounds crazy today lol.

Vols may have had a shot at repeating as national champions that year, even without winning the conference.

You mean you would have had a chance to repeat in '99?

lol yep, the days before the SEC completely dominated (although the SEC still ended up winning the championship that year).

Still hurts my soul. I remember where I was, what I was wearing, everything I said at that moment.

You could add this one Jon.
71 Liberty bowl screw job.

The game my Daddy would get pissed about if it was discussed in his presence. SEC refs were screwing us 30 years before we joined the conference.

Never heard of that one before. I read the article, sounds like classic SEC officiating to me!

quote:

The fumble recovery actually was a con job, according to Tennessee defensive end Carl Johnson. "Arkansas had played a very good game," he said. "It's obvious the Arkansas guy fell right on the ball." Johnson explained that every Vol not involved in the pile, including those on the bench, pointed toward the Arkansas goal and said "our ball." It's one of the oldest football tricks in the book, and this night it worked in the Vols' favor.

Carl Witherspoon is credited with the recovery. According to the Northwest Arkansas Times article, Arkansas partisans blamed SEC official Preston Watts for all the turmoil. (There were three SEC officials in the game, two from the Southwest Conference.) The legend goes that Arkansas guard Tom Reed came out of the pile with the ball and handed it to Watts, who then awarded possession to Tennessee at the Razorbacks 37. "I got the ball and cradled it in my chest," Reed said after the game. "Three Tennessee players jumped on top of me, but I still had it. "Finally, the official came up and put his hands on the ball, so I gave it to him, and he signaled Tennessee's ball." The Vols took over at the Razorback 36-yard line and were in the end zone in a flash.

This game had to have one of the worst calls I can remember. The refs cheated...beyond the shadow of a doubt.

That Tennessee game was more blatant than any I can remember, even worse than the recent Florida game.

Tennessee was #2 in the BCS going into this game. They prob would have made the title the game over Va Tech even though they were undefeated based on SOS. If you remember, quality wins and SOS counted a lot back then.

Can't believe the 6 OT game in 2002 hasn't been mentioned yet.
