I don't know if it will last more than a season or two, but I'd rather watch it than basketball.

Learning lessons from our future President's failure. If you're going to compete, do that shite in the spring.

The third guy taken in their draft is a WR from my Alma Mater - Division III Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

Galen Hall is one of the coaches. He's 75 years old.

Several of the other coaches are so obscure they don't even have Wikipedia pages.

I don't think I'd be investing in season tickets.....

Id love to watch some football in spring. If Birmingham gets a team ill definitely go to a game.

Would be sweet if a team were to locate in Birmingham and use Alabama college stadiums(BDS and JHS) as their home fields.

Seeing as this is a publicly traded company we're discussing here, I think this needs to be moved to the Money Talk board so those savvy investors can get a piece of this while it's still at about $.65/share.

2 conflicting opinions here.

My predictions are a little mixed too.
I was one of the guys who enjoyed the USFL for actual football, and could still name probably over half the teams. It was great legitimate football, and we saw good things from both the players (a lot of future NFL stars) and coaches... the Tampa Bandits were coached by Steve Spurrier and ran the Fun-n-Gun, The Houston Gamblers were June Jones (I think) and ran the Run-n-Shoot, Philadelphia Stars were Jim Mora and won a ton of games, playing the classic Mora style that he brought to the Saints later.

The XFL was nothing but a money grab gimmick by Vince McMahon. It wasn't pure football.

Drawbacks would be that it's damn expensive to run a full-sized football team, even if you don't pay players much.
A possible boost would be to play football with "traditional" rules; touchbacks at the 20, sudden-death OT, extra points at the 2, catch is determined by common sense. And crazy thought here- get rid of replay, go with the call on the field... you get a quicker game, and the occasional "oh he missed that" instead of ultra-confusing semantics. In other words, football most of us grew up with.

didn't they try a league similar to this not long ago, and they never even got to having a season?

The UFL probably had the best chance to succeed since the USFL, based on quality of play.

They had a lot of NFL coaches and fringe NFL talent.

I'm hopeful the actual broadcasts are done in a serious, professional style. Treat it like football

I've linked to the MLFB bios of all of the coaches. There are a few names that should be familiar to football fans there. There are a couple of familiar names on the draftee list, too. . .Adams was a part of the same offense as Jarius Wright and Greg Childs at Arkansas (and was actually drafted ahead of both of them), while LeFevour was drafted by the Bears a few years ago.

The MLFB website doesn't list the cities that the teams will be playing in, though it does hint at a couple of locations. It says that they're targeting "emerging and underserved markets" that don't have direct competition from other big league sports teams. They plan on running their league from April to June, and already have a television deal in place. . .a two-year deal, even. . .for all 40 regular season games, as well as the post-season.

A spring football league would be a major draw in the smaller cities that don't have MLB or NBA teams.

Yep. D3.

When I went there (85-89), they'd shut down basketball a few years earlier and the athletics program consisted of baseball, tennis, and golf.

Now they've got the full slate. Football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, and wrestling for men and basketball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, golf, and tennis for women.

The football program's about a decade old. Mike Turk (Former Troy QB) is the coach and the program's not bad at all. I don't think they've had a losing season sine their first year. They finished the season ranked in the D3 top 25 and made it to the second round of the playoffs.

If they put out a good product, I could easily see a Birmingham team drawing 30-40k.

If they had a place to play.

So the 8 teams will be in markets where a NFL and MLB team don't exist?

Salt Lake City
Portland
Albuquerque
Omaha
Oklahoma City
San Antonio
Las Vegas

???
