Congratulations Cougs on your "safe hire". This coach won't get hired away.

Certainly a very unimpressive start for Applewhite. I don't dislike Applewhite, but I hope Fertitta is made a fool of.

You never hire within. I would hate to be a fan of a team that hired within.

Think some Clemson fans have changed their minds about that?

Same result would have happened under Herman

Houston only got up for big games this year. Can't blame that all on Applewhite.

He was unimpressive as the OC at Bama. There was no reason that he shouldn't have been able to win it all in 2008 with JPW and those fantastic Bama Bangs. It was all a set up.

Alabama was a 9-4 or 10-3 team in 2007. The shitty arse offensive playcalling killed momentum and then the bottom fell out after the LSU game.

Yeah, lost to UGA for crissakes. Almost lost to Nutt. ULM. Textbooks. That was a frustrating season.

I was afraid Saban would say frick it.

Applewhite was told to get lost after the 07 season. Right?

Yes. McElwain was the OC in 2008-11.

What killed 2007 was the textbook suspensions. That, and JPW throwing the most God awful 100 yard pick six against MSU.

Not even in the same boat. Shula got hired at Bama while the Tide was on probation to be nothing but a yes man to the administration and make sure the players didn't frick shite up any more than they already had.

Just so bad

My uncle was jokingly yelling for a sniper in the stands to shoot JPW in the leg at the end of that game

JPW had some infuriating moments his first 2 years as the starter

During the 2007 season, Applewhite had John Parker Wilson attempt 40+ passes in five games and 30+ passes in ten games . Think about how absurd that is considering JPW's severe limitations as a QB and how turnover prone he was. As much as I dislike the guy, at least McElwain was smart enough to realize that the best way to win games was to limit JPW's pass attempts in order to keep turnovers and mistakes at a minimum.

As a Bama fan I can tell you that Kiffin is a much better coach than Applewhite. I think that was a dumb hire, that had to do with Texas ego more than coaching credentials and results on the field.
