Conventional wisdom in a nutshell:

A) LSU is always loaded with talent (more active NFL players than anyone in the country)
B) But they are lacking competent QB play, which will limit them in 2017

I want to take a closer look at B.

Last year, in SEC games only, Danny Etling was:
#4 in completion percentage (61.1%)
#5 in QBR (128.9)
#5 in yds/att (7.36)

Very solid numbers.

And he finished strong. His last 4 games were against Arkansas, Florida, Texas A&M, and Louisville. In those 4 games he went 60/98 for 902 yards with 4 TD's and 1 INT. On a per-game basis, that's about 225 yds/game with a 61.2% completion percentage.

No, he's not Deshaun Watson or even Swag Kelly. He won't extend plays with his feet which is how you beat Bama. But this whole idea that LSU doesn't have competent QB play is simply false.

Sauces:

He's a pretty decent game manager. He's probably about like McElroy was (I don't think he's as athletic as John Parker was, but he might make better decisions).

If somebody bottles up your run game, he's not going to win the game. However, he is good enough to play off that run game when it's functional.

LSU could have (and has had) a lot worse. However, the ceiling is pretty low.

Etling and Ensminger did as good as they could have being pushed into the captains chair mid season.

Thats why Im optimistic we can be very good with a full offseason under some good offensive coaches

This.

Low ceiling, nothing special, but can win games if given help by defense and running game.

A formula which would have given LSU 10+ win seasons the last decade every year if they'd had it.

Slow release. Weak arm. Statue in the pocket. His passes when in the air look strikingly similar to a clear plastic sack of hammered dog shite.

Good stats.

I guess the idea of qb problems come from LSU not having that great of a season though they are a top 5 talented team. So if its not the qb's fault, where does the fault lie.

By LSU standards, yes, he's competent.

To me stats mean very little about a QB. The reason GM's in the NFL struggle so bad with QB drafts is because you can't really put your finger on what makes someone great or good. For all the crap people talk about Greg Mac he made plays when plays needed to be made. Our QB led the conference in several stats pre-injury last season, but I suspect you couldn't have found 4 coaches in our league who would have swapped QB's with us.

So, in your opinion, why did LSU lose 4 games last year?

Your argument is invalid.

Last year your QB played in 13 games with 2,423 yards, 54.3 completion %, and a total QBR of 124.3

Last year Etling played in only 11 games with 2,123 yards, 59.5 completion %, and a total QBR of 135.5

But, by all means tell us more about this amazing Fitzgerald that's "better" than Etling

The SEC sucked last year at the QB position. My guess you would find similar results during other years when LSU was average.

Agreed, stats don't tell you everything. But if a guy isn't turning the ball over and is averaging about 8 yards an attempt, that means he's probably pretty solid.

ok. Then why did they go 7-4 in the regular season with a team "loaded with NFL talent" and competent qb play?

False tRant bravado aside...are you really exciting about Etling as your QB?
