and first in the SEC.
This might be the most underrated unit in CFB this year.

Running up the score on the likes of Missouri really bumped us up there... and made Orgeron our new coach.
Thanks?
Thanks?

Interesting would not have though they led the SEC in that stat. I bet they are near last in offensive plays per game.

Skeptical response is skeptical.

And Bama's defense is near NFL level quality.
An unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

Fournette averaging 58 yards a carry against Ole Miss inflates that

Single game rushing record was broken twice this past season. That's impressive.

Oh look. Texag7 in an LSU thread. Shocking.

I think it was pretty well established that if LSU came up against an elite defense this year (read: Wisconsin, Auburn, Bama, and Florida were all top-10 in ppg allowed), they struggled. But outside of that, they wrecked some teams.

Yeah, the hype about an irresistible force is nice hyperbole but... other teams actually did score points against those teams. If you watched Arkansas and FSU play Florida you should have walked away dissatisfied as a LSU fan.

This response makes you look really dumb.

This is an SEC forum. People are gonna make threads about the various SEC teams.
I'm saying something good about your team as well.
Also, worth noting that LSU has that ranking even with playing all of those defensive heavy teams. That's impressive.

Yep. For most of the season after Auburn, we just out-talented people pretty easily. When it came to Bama & Florida, we were very rudely reminded we had an interim HC and OC handling the reins.

I can't blame coaches for UF. It came down to player execution and turnovers in red zone.

Florida was just a weird arse game. It didn't remind me of that at all. I can't remember LSU giving up another 99 yard TD pass. Also, LSU failed to score in the redzone 7 times this season out of 37 attempts. Two of those times occurred at the end of games LSU won. 3 of them occurred in the Florida game. So, of the majority of the times LSU failed to score in the redzone when it mattered occurred in the Florida game.
Edit: I should add that the only times LSU got within the 5 yard line and didn't score all occurred in the Florida game and that happened 3 times. Drawing big far reaching conclusions about the coaching staff unable to execute against "elite" defenses" (seriously, florida sucks) is a bit much.

Let me reply with a couple of obvious points: 1) running up the score is a thing and when you continue to try to score more instead of play conservatively that obviously affects your ypp as well as your score; 2) my assumption is the yards per play were distorted by running up big numbers against bad opponents.
I admit I should have used said something along the lines of not calling off the dogs instead of using a substitute platitude in "running up the score"... but I think any fair minded person who wasn't offended by the insinuation would understand the idea without any problem or offense being taken.
Let's evaluate whether or not my idea has any merit:
Yards/Play by Game:
Opponent: Yards:Plays:Yard/Play
Wisconsin 257yards / 50 plays : 5.01 ypp
Jacksonville State 371yards / 56 plays : 6.65 ypp
MSU 392yards / 72 plays : 5.44 ypp
Auburn 338yards / 59 plays : 5.73 ypp
Miles Fired
Missouri 634yards / 82 plays : 7.73 ypp
Southern Miss 459yards / 42 plays : 10.93 ypp
Ole Miss 515yards / 64 plays : 8.05 ypp
Alabama 125yards / 51 plays : 2.45 ypp
Arkansas 547yards / 67 plays : 8.16 ypp
Florida 423yards / 71 plays : 5.96 ypp
A&M 622yards / 74 plays : 8.41 ypp
The numbers that Orgeron ran up against teams he beat comfortably and continued to pound really do seem to pad the statistics: USM, Missouri, OM, Arkansas, and A&M. The numbers against an outstanding Alabama team were obviously horrible (even compared to what other opponents did against Alabama) and the LSU numbers against the other good opponents that beat LSU: Wisconsin, Auburn, and Florida were also much lower than average (all between 5 and 6 yards per play).
Don't you think it is true that LSU did not have a difference in real performance (in terms of either wins or ypp) against real opponents throughout the year? Alabama was the worst game, but the other three good opponents held LSU to similar results (a loss and 5-6 yards/play). Upon reflection doesn't it seem obvious the inflation did come from games against the bad teams on the schedule?
