LSU only SEC school that raises more donations for athletics than for academics

LSU is still trying to fix the leaks that flood the basement of Middleton Library during routine rainstorms. But it provides top-shelf maintenance to the world-class, $3 million live tiger habitat that it built on campus for the school mascot.

The university trimmed at least a half-dozen programs and lost a raft of star faculty members in recent years as the state cut support to its flagship school by more than half. And yet LSU is spending almost $10 million to buy out the contract and fire one of the most successful head football coaches in school history, a man who won 77 percent of his games.

The reason LSU can constantly tout new upgrades to Tiger Stadium while simultaneously struggling to provide enough dorm rooms for freshmen is that LSU is exceptional at fundraising for athletics and mediocre at raising dollars for academics.

In a typical year, LSU raises more money for athletic programs than it does for programs that benefit the classroom, according to tax filings reviewed by The Advocate.

One might expect that to be typical of all universities with major football programs. In fact, LSU is the outlier.

Of the nine schools in the Southeastern Conference with separate foundations for athletics and academics, LSU is the only one where athletic fundraising outpaces academic fundraising, according to the newspaper’s analysis of four years of tax documents.

"If you look at the buildings of LSU, all of the newest and most spectacular buildings belong to athletics," said Kevin Cope, president of the Faculty Senate. "Meanwhile, there are faculty, students and community members who work in buildings where the plumbing doesn't work, walls are falling down and the facilities are generally in a state of Third World disrepair."

This article is so stupid for so many reasons. Atheltics make millions for the school.

Well that's the case at many schools. There's not really any way to spin this. Y'all have gotten a pretty bad ROI lately too

No, what's stupid is that Louisianans care more about entertainment than education.

Athletics doesn't give NEARLY as much to academics than other schools raise for their academic endowments. It's a travesty that shouldn't be underplayed.

ETA: To the down voter, I'm sorry you hate the actual university, but without it there would be no Tiger Athletics.

It is a giant travesty, but you aren't gonna get much sympathy on this board considering the average Ranter.

This isn't really a surprise when you look at where we fall in the academic rankings.

The nicest building I had classes in at LSU was the Cox Center (which was built for student athletes)

I had nicer classrooms at my Jefferson Parish public schools than I ever did at LSU

Because the state is going bankrupt, not because of our athletic teams

And our athletic department gives more money to the academic side than any other school in the SEC. So I guess it's a wash

Nope, foundations are pretty much your standard normal FASB accounting. There are a few differences in how they do equity, but in terms of recognizing revenues and expenses they have to operate and recognize things like a normal business would. When somebody pledges money or gives a cash contribution it is recognized as revenue. There isn't really any way around it or to mess with it. Now, they can mess with the "Net Income" number because they can transfer money out to the school and call it an expense, but the revenue numbers are pretty straightforward.

I'm sorry, but athletics doesn't give $30 million to academics. It doesn't come close to what other schools bring in on the academic side.

There is NO way to put a positive spin on this, LSU graduates simply don't give back to their alma mater like graduates of other schools do.

I got no dog in this fight, but I thought the LSU business school complex was first class the last time we visited campus.

The point of the article is that academics are not anywhere near a priority to LSU fans as athletics is. The fact that the AD gives money to the school does not change that.
