At least LSU got that numbr one football recruiting class in the history of history.

LSU sucks and Louisiana is a hell-hole.
Number 1 in political corruption by a double-again margin.
Now they're playing political games with childrens' futures.

Geaux LSU!!!

Louisiana Governor says that everything Louisiana is in danger, including LSU football if taxes increases aren't passed.
Spring classes will be cut, which will endanger the eligibility of all student athletes.

In the rest of the country, we call this extortion. But it's whatevs. I for one would laugh if LSU football fell into the shitter.

It won't matter, they won't have any NCAA athlete in any sport b/c none of them will be in class and the ones who are in class right now will get Incomplete.

The school is heading towards financial exigency.

I thought you had to have an A/B average to qualify? That may be easy for you and I but many kids have to work hard for that.

For the lowest level of TOPS, you need a 2.5 GPA and I think a 20 ACT score.

2.5 GPA in Louisiana high schools.

Louisiana's state budget increased by 45% in the past 10 years. During that time the country's Gross Domestic Product only increased by 25%.

Louisianans need to be asking themselves why their State Government is spending more than it can possibly pay. Maybe they need to address other expenditures within their out of control Government and leave education alone?

Nah, makes too much sense. This is Louisiana we are talking about here. They're going to extort the public for more taxes.

Why would the Governor specifically mention LSU football? Because he realizes that to most Louisianans, LSU Football is like a singular point of pride in their entire lives.

Either way you cut it, I would be quite upset with my Government if I lived in Louisiana, but that goes without saying.

Education is one of the only things the Louisiana constitution allows us to cut.

450,000,000 tax dollars tied up in 156 stautory dedications. This is basically theft in a free market system.

There's a substantial cut right there.

Want another?

Louisiana has 19,000 consultants on its payroll. Ever seen how much money professional consultants make -- in any field? 19,000 is a whole hell of a lot of high dollar salaries.

22% of State Government "manager" types manage exactly ONE employee.

I guess without giving more specific examples what I'm trying to say is that your state treasurer sent a list of FOUR HUNDRED ways that the State Government can reduce its deficit without touching education.

But it's whatevs.

Political corruption is like your thing down there.

What's the value of TOPS for a full year of school?

There are different levels depending on what you qualify for thru your GPA but it typically covers a majority of if not full tuition cost

People actually believe statements like this. The governor recognizes LSU is the state's most cherished asset. To make a political statement, he threatens to not fund that asset. Nothing more, nothing less.

No one really knows what those are though. I'm sure some would work and it's certainly worth looking into.

Unfortunately the only real places you are allowed to cut is healthcare and higher ed.

Hopefully the politicians don't follow party lines and work together. I'm sure it will take a combination of cuts plus new revenues to try and get the deficit righted.

Using 2015 numbers, in-state tuition for 30 hours is $7,566 per year. Basic TOPS covers tuition.
Fees not covered by TOPS brings the resident total to $9,722 per year. TOPS covers 78% of tuition + required fees.
The total estimated cost to attend for residents is $22,030. TOPS covers 34% of the cost to attend.

The governor did not specifically mention LSU Football. But the state of LA subsidizes fball at the other state schools and that subsidy might be lost. LSU self-funds all its sports so LSU Football would not be affected.

All of this is to get the public ready for a special session of the Legislature which begins on Sunday in Baton Rouge. We Louisianans are gonna end up with a combo of spending cuts and tax increases and the crisis will pass for now. Governor Edwards (his comments last night) was simply getting the average Louisiana citizen ready for that stopgap solution.
