To be truthful for me...I think Chavis is a better coach,but I want to see how a different direction will go. And the recruiting will be better.

Most LSU fans weren't but not a damn thing the base could do about it,time to move on.The upgrade at Dline and overall recruiting helped.

There are a few gripes with Chavis but not many. He's a very good coordinator. Towards the end he got very lazy on the recruiting trails and the lapses late in our biggest games were infuriating.

I wasn't happy to see him go but I wasn't crushed either. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery or some new energy injected into your program. I think Chavis and LSU got just that.

A change was needed, not real excited with Steele hire.

Chavis was a rock of stability. He was a good DC but he wasn't irreplaceable and he had lots of faults. The biggest issue with Chavis leaving is when and how he did it. He left LSU high and dry unexpectedly at a crucial moment at the end of a recruiting class and at a time that made it extremely difficult for LSU to court elite DC's.

LSU would have liked to get a DC with a better resume than Steele, but the timing made the pool of candidates very limited. Whether Steele can scheme and have a defense as successful as Chavis with LSU talent is up in the air, but I think certainly many LSU fans are genuinely excited about the recruiting boost offered by Steele and Orgeron. Anytime you replace a consistent and steady presence running your defense it is a risk, and I think most LSU fans would have chosen to maintain Chavis going into what is expected to be a year with tremendous potential for this team. That being said, the desire to go in a different direction from Chavis is also not just some defensive reaction to him leaving for A&M as the Aggies wish to portray it. There was a lot of frustration with some of Chavis' personnel decisions and lack of pass rush. Chavis forced the issue so expectedly LSU fans are washing their hands of him and hoping the obvious recruiting boost offered by Steele and Orgeron can be supplemented with a more aggressive defensive strategy that will pay dividends. The results are yet to be seen but the lionization of Chavis by the A&M fans just shows how delusional and out of touch they are with reality. He had his detractors over the years at Tennessee and LSU. He is a good DC but not what they make him out to be.

I would rather have Chavis than Steele coaching LSU's defense this year but that's primarily because you know what you are getting with Chavis. If LSU would have had 6 months or so to search out a DC replacement for Chavis I think most would have been much less upset about the loss TBH.

I'm personally glad he is gone. Did nothing for recruiting and Brick Haley was terrible. Chavis is a good coach, but his calls at the end of games were brutal to watch. I will hold judgement on Steele. Orgeron is a breath of fresh hair. With the talent on defense I'm really not concerned. The dline will be improved with Coach O's leadership. Steele was in charge of LB's at Bama so I think that will help our young LB's develop. Secondary is great again.
