I think it's a cool tradition with those jersey numbers. Saw on twitter a few mins ago where they voted on Cole Freeman wearing #8 next year (I would have bet on Kramer Robertson or Antoine Duplantis if there had been a line ha).

Y'all do that with football and #18 too, right?

I love how Alabama does not retire numbers (I think it's gay---cooler to honor numbers or be able to wear the numbers of past greats that retire them). Look at the freaking Yankees, if they don't start "un-retiring" numbers soon, there 3B is gonna be wearing #74 and not just during spring training.

But the honoring a player with a certain number is cool----again wish 'Bama did something similar. A cooler than some lame "C" on the jersey.

Retiring jersey numbers is stupid as hell.

So you think it's gay of Tennessee to retire numbers of 4 players who died in WWII?

Disagree here. I think it's very cool unless you start retiring everybody where it gets diluted. We've retired 3 that really truly deserved it and 1 jsut because he broke the streak against tech, so that was probably deserved too. I doubt we retire anymore, so 4 seems fine.

It also adds to the lore and legend of the program. I mean, when you think UGA #34 there's no doubt who you're talking about. If 20 more people since then have/had worn #34 it would lose the mystique around it.

It sounds like poor taste, but yes. Build them a plague, honor their numbers, have ceremonies where each kid that wears #40 for example knows the story and honor behind it.

C'mon man they've already passed away, no reason to add a plague into the mix too.

Do you know how hard it is to start a plague? Epidemic or Pandemic Plague? Not sure how either would honor the fallen players.

Yeah I would have thought Robertson would have wore #8 as well. Freeman will wear it well.

UT retired numbers of football 4 football players who died in WWII. Other than that, they've only retired 3 numbers. Two are in the NFL Hall of Fame and the 3rd will be there as soon as he is eligible. UT has set up criteria that must be met to retire future numbers, including:

"A candidate must have achieved THREE of the following five collegiate honors:
a. Induction into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
b. Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Year.
c. Consensus All-America.
d. Heisman Trophy winner.
e. Have won one of the following general athletic/academic or non-position specific
awards: Sullivan Award, SEC Athlete of the Year (all sports) or Draddy Award.

Recognizing the tremendous collective impact of Tennessee Volunteers in professional
football, candidates must have also achieved THREE of the following four professional
distinctions:
a. Induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.
b. NFL offensive or defensive MVP.
c. Achieved Pro Bowl status in 5 seasons.
d. Holder of a major career or season statistical record (yards, sacks, tackles,
touchdowns scored or thrown). "

Cole will be a senior. Kid was an All-American JUCO transfer from Delgado last year. It's been his dream to play LSU baseball. He led the team in batting average and is a Charlie Hustle type scrappy player. Brings his lunchpail.

I would have thought KR, as well; but no way Duplantis should have received it next year.
