for 3 or more years

For example, since the '60s Alabama has frequently finished outside the Top 25 for two years in a row ('06/'07... '03/'04... '00/'01... '97/'98...'69/'70), but Bama has not experienced 3 consecutive years of finishing outside the Top 25 since the 1958.

So here's the longest streak for each SEC school of being able to say they've not gone 3 consecutive years outside the Final Top 25:

58+ years: Alabama (1959-current)
38+ years: Auburn (1979-current)
27+ years: Florida (1990-current)
25 years: Tennessee (1985-2009)
21+ years: LSU (1996-current)
20+ years: Georgia (1997-current)*
17 years: Texas A&M (1985-2001)
15 years: Arkansas (1977-1991)
15 years: Ole Miss (1952-1966)
10+ years: Missouri (2007-current)*
7 years: Kentucky (1949-1955)
6 years: South Carolina (2010-2015)
5 years: Mississippi State (1992-1996)
4 years: Vanderbilt (2011-2014)

*Georgia and Missouri are in danger of their streaks ending without a Top 25 finish in 2017. Georgia's current streak began in 1997, following a 4-year hiatus from the AP Poll (1993-1996). There was a 2-year blip in the middle without a ranked finish ('09/'10) and then also 2014 in which we did not finished the year ranked. The past two years (2015 and 2016), Georgia also finished unranked, meaning if we do not finish the season ranked in 2017, our streak of not having a 3-year period of finishing outside the poll will come to an end.

Mizzou is in the same situation, only their streak began in 2007.

There are currently 5 SEC schools that are in the midst of a period of going 3 or more years without a Top 25 finish:

*Texas A&M has gone 3 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25
*South Carolina has gone 3 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25
*Vanderbilt has gone 4 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25
*Arkansas has gone 5 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25
*Kentucky has gone 32 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25

As mentioned earlier, Georgia and Missouri have gone 2 consecutive seasons without finishing in the Top 25... as has Mississippi State.

Ole Miss has gone just 1 season now without a Top 25 finish.

The other 5 all finished ranked last year.

wouldn't our streak be over then?

also wait...14? Pretty sure we finished ranked that year.

ETA: I assume you meant to say 13. Which means 15/16/potentially 17 would be it.

I'm with you now.

Arbitrariness of picking '3' aside (I'd go with 2 consecutive years, but 3 is also interesting), it's an interesting read.

Of course, I do know you just went to all this effort to troll Vandy. Vandy fans are not stupid -- we saw immediately where you were going with it.

Arkansas' longest would actually be from 1975-1991

Arkansas finished in the top 8 in both polls in 1975 making that 17 consecutive years.

Arkansas also went 16 years from 1959-1973

So random. Why don't you make it four years. Or five years.

Because 2 consecutive years outside the Top 25 appears to be fairly common. But for the bigger programs, 3 consecutive years outside the Top 25 typically means quite an epic downturn.

Since 1960, Bama has 5 times experienced two consecutive seasons of finishing outside the Top 25: '69/'70... '97/'98... '00/'01... '03/'04... '06/'07. Yet since 1960, they've never experienced 3 consecutive seasons outside the Top 25.

Auburn is very similar. Since 1960, Auburn has 6 times experienced two consecutive seasons of finishing outside the Top 25: '61/'62... '80/'81... '91/'92... '98/'99... '08/'09... and '11/'12. But they've only experienced two periods of 3 or more years outside the Top 25. Both of those were 4-year periods, '64-'67 and '75-'78.

Since Florida emerged as relevant in 1990, they've twice experienced periods of 2 consecutive seasons finishing outside the Top 25 ('10/'11 and '13/'14). They've not hit 3 consecutive seasons outside the Top 25 since before Spurrier.

Georgia too. We finished unranked in '09/'10 and again in '15/'16, but we've not gone 3 years in a row outside the Top 25 since the Ray Goff days.

Or maybe you didnt want LSU to finish ahead of Bama in something so you didnt use the two year method. LSU would be 97-98 last time they did 2 straight years..

Yeah, I'm sure a Georgia fan is going out of his way to make Bama look better than LSU.
