Is this just a cyclical thing or is it a long term concern? 2015 State grabbed a good chunk, but 2014 and 2016 they finished with 3 of the top 16 and only 1 of the top 12.

2010 - 3 of Top 8 (1 of top 5, 2 of top 6)
2011 - 2 of Top 8 (1 of top 5, 1 of top 6)
2012 - 4 of Top 8 (2 of top 5, 2 of top 6)
2013 - 4 of Top 8 (2 of top 5, 3 of top 6)
2014 - 3 of Top 8 (0 of top 5, 1 of top 6)
2015 - 4 of Top 8 (4 of top 5, 4 of top 6)
2016 - 0 of Top 8 (0 of top 5, 0 of top 6)

Wait 0 for 5 in 2015? What site are you looking at? Were Leo Lewis and Jamal Peters really not in the top 5?

State has done a good job with the talent on hand. The problem is there are two SEC schools in a small population state. Then you have a great program on one side and a very solid one on the other. Alabama and LSU can cherry pick every year.

As long as Mullen is there they will have a good team because with him recruiting these diamonds in the rough. They buy into the system of staying all 4 or 5 years to develop...which is good they get a ton of experience and they get their degree.

I posted on this on the recruiting board last year. MSU is being left behind by the SEC west. The talent gap is getting worse and that will eventually catch up to them.

Mullen will be gone within 2 years is my personal opinion.

This will be the second time I've brought up Leo Lewis and Jamal Peters in this thread.

2015 doesn't exactly backup your argument. It is a bridge (read shitty) year for this class. To bridge the good 2015 class and potentially good 2017 class.

Really isn't an argument, was more of an open ended question.

That was kind of was I was trying to figure out. Makes sense.

To add on 2011 was ranked 35th in the country. That class produced Dak, Josh Robinson, Benardrick McKinney, Preston Smith and more.

Mullen does a great job identifying guys with certain skills that he can develop. State always ends up with solid, mid-late round pick type guys who produce by their junior and senior years.

This is a trend.

What class was it that Ole Miss basically took while MSU was playing in a bowl?

It's a recurring theme under Mullen. His staff has never recruited well.

But yet, He has managed to be ranked #1 in the nation and has a 10 win regular season. All while never having 1 top ten recruiting class. Meanwhile Ole Miss IS BUYING any 5 star that will listen and the best they can do is 9-3 pathetic..

Their fan base thinks they are beginning some kind of football dynasty.. its hilarious.

Which was good for about an 8-5 average overall since that time. While that may be good for one of the more productive 5 yr runs in program history, I can't help but feel the MS schools have the instate talent pool to be more.

I don't doubt CDM has found some diamonds in the rough and done well with them, but there is more work to do.

The state of MS on a per capita basis is historically a top 5 producer of professional talent for the Big 3 sports.

The talent is there to be a successful/competitive program in spite of sharing the state with Ole Miss. But, it takes winning the majority of the identified top talent first, which this thread indicated was a challenge for MSU. Establishing and winning relationships with a good JUCO network that runs through MS. Getting a few top out of state guys routinely vice looking for more diamonds in border states. Then, looking for those instate diamonds.

I have no doubt that for every top kid Id'd in MS there is another equally as talented kid out there in a small, rural school district with no highlight reel, camp exposure, or major recruiting service coverage. The per capita amount of professional athletes the state produces indicates this to be a strong possibility. Now, the subject of academic eligibility might be an issue with some in that population, but I find it hard to believe they can't squeeze more productive juice from that lemon.

Honestly, our staff just isn't good at recruiting. It doesn't help when Bama is winning championships 80 miles away. Plus Mullen doesn't address the coaching change rumors every year which makes people think he has one leg out the door (which he may).

There's no way to spin it this year. We do not have a good class. We do add a couple OL prospects which we need, but they're 2 years away from contributing.

I'm optimistic for next year, however. We added some new guys to the staff that are supposed to be good recruiters, and the numbers are good for having a large class.

Dak is an incredibly gifted athlete. There's no denying he carried a ton of weight for the team. We'll see how it plays out this year.

There's reason to believe OM is building something special but no one has mentioned "dynasty". However you justify it, in 4 years OM has continually improved and proven they can compete with anyone and have success.

Freeze:
2015 10-3 (5-1 vs Top 25)
2014 9-4 (3-3)
2013 8-5 (1-3)
2012 7-6 (0-4)

Mullen:
2015 9-4 (0-4)
2014 10-3 (3-3)
2013 7-6 (0-5)
2012 8-5 (0-4)
2011 7-6 (0-4)
2010 9-4 (1-4)
2009 5-7 (1-4)

Nobody suggested he could not coach, or that he can't coach up players.

Just imagine if he had gotten 2 to 3 5 stars every year, or add 2-3 4 stars to those classes.
