The truth, Arnold said, is that Broyles recently had a stroke and is on hospice, not in hospice — a seemingly minor but very important distinction.
“That little word makes a big difference,” Arnold said. “When you go into hospice, you’re talking very little life expectancy left. You’re in a facility. That is end of life.
“But you can sign up for hospice and they can come to your house for six months. Sometimes people will graduate off of hospice. This is more quality of life management.”
Broyles has been visited the last several days by former players and friends like Barry Switzer and Houston Nutt and is in good spirits, Arnold said.
“He’s really happy,” Arnold said. “Really enjoying talking about football and all those things. He’s really happy and enjoying life.”
Broyles was Arkansas’ head football coach for 19 seasons from 1958 until 1976, compiling a record of 144–58–5 with the Razorbacks. He also spent one season (1957) as Missouri’s head coach.
Broyles’ 1964 team was named national champion by several selectors. He also won seven Southwest Conference titles as Arkansas coach.

Hope some how coach can graduate from hospice at home and not have to move into the facility. Had been reports he was not doing very well.

We send patients home on hospice sometimes, just not as a death sentence.

I met and spent a short time with him on an airplane going to N.O. for a Sugar Bowl....fine gentleman...very cordial and down to earth. May God bless him.

He has been the face of the Razorbacks since the late 1950's. He won the schools only national championship and is responsible for the schools longest winning streak. He is responsible for having the foresight to change the landscape of college athletics when Arkansas left a major conference and joined another. He knew the SEC would be a money maker for the University of Arkansas and the SWC was going down hill with Texas at the helm.
Sooner rather than later, it will be a sad day for Arkansas, but also for college football in general. Basically an entire generation of great coaches are gone when he leaves the earth.

Random, but was it Broyles that called the Tennessee, Miami Sugar Bowl in the mid 80's?
Twas a Miami homer big-time.

I haven't heard much about Coach Broyles for a while. I suspected something like this was happening. He did great things for Arkansas.
He is a special man.

I saw on another board he wasn't actually IN hospice...which is a good thing...for now anyway.

Did Houston Nutt ever play or coach under Broyles?

One year under Broyles. One year under Holtz. Then transfer to Oklahoma State.
