With Kirby gone this Bama D is impressive ... just about anyone and everyone has to give credit where credit is due.
I'm not sure what the record is for a defense scoring TDs in a season, but Bama has got to be getting close. Not to mention TDs in consecutive games.
It's probably reached a point to wear opposing teams are going to have to scheme just to try to break the streak ... "whatever we do today boys, do not let their D score a TD on us!"
Anyways ... evidently Kirby was really holding them back.

Most consecutive since records have been kept for that stat. But that's only since 2000.

Kirby was kind of stale. Against a team like A&M he would have never unleashed the pass rush. Bama would have played contain and tried to keep Knight in the pocket. He would've completed passes all night or still escaped.
Pruitt came after Knight and he broke two long runs, but it was worth the 5 sacks and 2 turnovers.

Bama's D sucked arse until this season.

Alabama was going to blossom regardless of who the coordinator was because of the head coach and the amount of talent on that side of the ball. They just happened to find a top-notch replacement in Pruitt.

That's right - the talent Alabama now has on defense is heads and shoulders better than that crap they used to have 2-5 years ago....

Kirby is a great defensive coach, but it seems like we had trouble getting consistent pressure until last year. I think the talent is off the charts on the d-line this year, but Pruitt is also very aggressive with blitzes. Bama does have a new d-line coach, too.

Usually when a team "blossoms", they grow immediately into something from the something they once were - in this case, in a positive manner. Since you said it isn't the coaching, then it can only be the talent. So the implication here is that Bama's defensive talent has blossomed into something much better than what the talent level used to be under Smart....

Kirby is a great defensive coach. No doubt.
But Pruitts defense is angry.

Some have been better than others but Bama's defense hasn't "sucked arse" since Saban has been in Tuscaloosa.

It's pretty simple, his type of defense is a "contain" type of defense. That's the only real difference and it works fairly well with a high caliber defensive line but will not look as good with a merely "good" defensive line.

Oh, sorry. I should've said they were going to be "successful" regardless of who was going to take over because of the talent and depth.
Pruitt inherited a talented defense at Florida State that was solid under Mark Stoops and did basically the same thing. He is familiar with the system and brings his own creative looks to this defense, so that works to their advantage.
Saban would not have kept Kirby as long as he did if he wasn't doing a damn good job coaching those defenses.

Kirby's defense was more schematic, and when he failed to scheme appropriately, it would show up big time.
Pruitt is using a more hands-off approach. Defenders still look to the sideline, but if you pay attention, the defenders themselves are the ones making the adjustments at this point. It also helps when we play exclusively man to man. Leaves as many people in the box to contain the run, leads to more turnovers, but the downside is that players with extremely accurate arms can throw passes on us. Eventually they'll get picked off, but it still leaves room for a lot of jump ball plays.
It's a different style of defense, it's hard to say which is better at this point.

Alabama's defense started evolving into what it is now a couple years ago. Pruitt has done a great job, but he stepped into an amazing situation thanks to Kirby. Also, Kirby was responsible for Alabama's 2011 defense, which is considered one of the greatest ever.

Just proves we don't know as much as we think we know - and that includes Nick Saban. Pruitt has really got this D playing at it's peak with aggressive blitzes and combo zone/man coverages. Alabamas D never looked so good and it's Pruitt that did it - with his play calling and aggressive mentality. We all thought Kirby was a defensive genious. Turns out Kirby was holding back Bama's true potential.
You would be hard pressed to find a combination of finer Coordinators than Kiffen and Pruitt together in the history of college football.
