Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart "has emerged as the frontrunner" for the South Carolina head coaching vacancy, according to a report from FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman, adding to the coaching search chaos of this season.

Steve Spurrier abruptly resigned at South Carolina on Oct. 12, and one day later Smart was considered the betting favorite to replace the Head Ball Coach in Columbia, according to Bovada. More than a month later, that still is still the case.

Smart, who is in his ninth season at Alabama, has been beside Nick Saban since his LSU days. The former Georgia defensive back has led the Crimson Tide to a No. 3 national ranking in total defense (265 yards allowed per game) this year.

The Gamecocks have posted a 3-8 (1-7 SEC) record and their season will end this weekend after a rivalry game with No. 1 Clemson. Second-ranked Alabama (10-1, 6-1 SEC) will travel to Auburn for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 28.

"I'm happy for our coaches to be recognized, and have opportunities," Saban said earlier this season. "When the time comes, I'll do everything I can to help them and I think they all know that. But at the same time, their job and their responsibility right now is to stay focused on our team and what we're doing. I think they all understand that."

So muschamp 2.0, cool.

At least muschamp spread his wings a bit before UF...kirby hasn't done a got damn thing in his career aside from ride saban's coattails.

Smart isn't going anywhere. If he wanted to become a HC, he would have already been gone

why the casty? There are obvious parallels, and what I said is true. Muschamp was at LSU, AU, and Texas. Outside of 1 season (which is so embarrassing it doesn't need mentioning) kirby has exclusively followed saban his whole career.

And as mentioned, SC aint florida.

I'd love SC to get kirby. I was terrified of them getting herman.

What if Kirby smart is the real key to all of Sabans success?

You realize he is only 39 years old, right? Maybe he has just been waiting for the best opportunity. I do believe he is the only coordinator we could hire to replace Les Miles that the fan base wouldn't melt over.

I think Kirby realizes that for him to have a shot at being head coach at Bama he will have to head coach experience

Two reasons.

1. You said "got damn". I hate when people do that. Just say/type god damn or don't insinuate it. Just a personal pet peeve i've developed lately.

2. He's done more than just "ride saban's coattails". He's been the DC of some of the best defenses in college football for multiple seasons in a row. It just sounds like you are underselling him because of Saban. I'm not saying that Smart is guaranteed to be successful, but he isn't just any coordinator either imo. I think he is somewhere in between what Muschamp and McElwain are capable of as head coaches.

3. He's a proven recruiter as well.

Dumbest post of the year candidate. Watch and learn son. This is the perfect job to cut his teeth on. He will recruit like Saban and build a East contender every year. Then he comes back in 4-5 years after Saban retires. Continues the dominance.

In a year with 1,492,920 coaching vacancies, if you can get your hands on Kirby Smart, you take him.

MF'ing this. There are a lot of girls at the dance, and we ain't the prettiest one. Find someone who wants the job and is halfway competent, and let's roll.

Well, they aren't getting Herman or Fuenfe. There are too many jobs ahead of them in the pecking order. And they need a young vibrant head coach. I can understand why they would hire Smart.

Kirby Smart is Ringo and Saban is Lennon/McCartney

I feel like this is a big risk. Should've let Smart prove himself at a smaller school.
