Surprised UGA's cost after aid was as high as it was.

Likely a result of some of the HOPE changes if I had to take a wild stab. HOPE did a ton at improving the academic standing of the school but also sent costs up pretty quickly. Then a couple of years ago, they had to make some changes to keep HOPE "float"ing. It's a bit of a cluster, but they seem to have it worked out on the surface now, even if it does disproportionately help the upper middle class (due to standardized testing scores playing a role in getting the Zell Miller version instead of the new "HOPE Lite"). Don't know a lot about our aid available for out of state.

UGA provides very little in out of state scholarships. It would've cost about the same as Vandy for me. Over 80% of UGA's students are Georgia residents.

At least that's how it was several years ago. This stuff can change pretty fast

These lists are always shite. Just some east coast journalist's opinion.

Damn... that's insane that it'd be the same as Vandy all in total. Even as a UGA grad and fan, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a hard time taking the Vandy degree there.

It's heavily resident for sure, and it's getting astronomically harder even for good in-state students to get admitted. The most recent stats indicate 87% of incoming first year students...

13% of the entering UGA first-year class come from outside Georgia and represent 43 different states. In addition, 230 students come from countries other than the United States. The top 10 home states (other than Georgia) of students are:

North Carolina
Texas
Virginia
Tennessee
Florida California
South Carolina
Maryland
New Jersey
New York

With that said, assuming my daughter (nowhere near college age at this point) is of similar academic performance level to myself and my wife, it's going to take a hell of a good offer to beat "free" from Alabama ... That out of state Capstone-Presidential Scholar series of scholarships (assuming something like that still exists) is pretty crazy. Any chance you know how long they've been doing that?

That was after counting scholarships. I think it would've been about 5k more per year in tuition for Vandy. Without scholarships UGA is about 15k less in tuition. UGA just didn't have many out of state scholarships, or at least I didn't get any of them

UA has been giving really great scholarships for a while now. If she can get national merit semifinalist, that's an even better deal. It's essentially full cost of attendance including a laptop and a research stipend. My sister got that back in '02, and I got it a few years ago.

Unfortunately if you live in Georgia getting National Merit will be harder then in Tennessee where I grew up.

A lot of people here in Alabama want a lottery scholarship though which will probably reduce the amount of money we can give in out of state scholarships if it ever happens.

They also included this stat '48% of the new first-year students had Social Security numbers assigned in a state other than Georgia.'

i'm not sure why.

G Tech is pretty bad about taking a large percentage of out of state students, and I think it is like 10 percent foreigners.
