I've started this thread before, maybe I'll make it an ongoing series who knows. Previous iterations can be found here (les miles) and here (hugh freeze). This isn't derogatory or heaping praise...it's simply a tool that we can look at to determine a coach's rank on a 1-10 scale. Pinkel is kind of one of those in betweens...not super great/elite, not bad either. Let's look.

2001: 4-7 (3-5), no bowl
2002: 5-7 (2-6), no bowl
2003: 8-5 (4-4). Beat nebraska, lost Indy bowl
2004: 5-6 (3-5), no bowl
2005: 7-5 (4-4). Beat nebraska, won Indy bowl
2006: 8-5 (4-4). Lost sun bowl
2007: 12-2 (7-1). Beat nebraska and high ranked kansas, won division, lost champ game, won cotton bowl
2008: 10-4 (5-3). beat nebraska, won division, lost champ game, won alamo bowl
2009: 8-5, (4-4). Lost texas bowl
2010: 10-3 (6-2). Beat oklahoma, lost insight bowl
2011: 8-5 (5-4). Beat texas. Won Indy bowl
2012: 5-7 (2-6). no bowl
2013: 12-2 (7-1). Beat uga and uf. won division, lost champ game, won cotton bowl
2014: 11-3 (7-1) beat florida and aTm, won division, lost champ game, won citrus bowl

I'm not super familiar with who was pretty good in the big 12 during some of this and who was bad, so I mainly focused on nebraska, texas, and OU for notables. They seemed to lose most games they played against OU and UT, but did get their fair share of wins against nebraska. 2007 was a phenomenal season that knocked on the door of a national title. 2/3 in good seasons so far in the SEC.

113-66 at missouri (63% win percentage). In 14 years, has finished in the top 10 2 times, top 25 5 times, and unranked 9 times. Has 4 division titles (and champ game appearances) in 14 seasons. 0 conference titles or BCS bowls.

So, those are what we know. Now how would we rank him? Missouri seems to be a school not known for recruiting well, so he's done some great things with what he has. Seems to be a better coach than some may think. Still, I'd like to see a little more highs and some less frequent lows. In my opinion, I will rate Gary Pinkel as a 6.5/10.

brilliant insight.

eta: sorry my threads can't live up to such classics from you as "global warming: real or fake?" and a complaint to the help board that your screen is too bright at night.

If anything it shows that ADs should show some patience, and that a bit of stability and continuity can go a long way in the volatile world of CFB.

Or don't?

Also, I checked out the Miles thread. I enjoy how you cast his biggest achievement as one of the most "fortuitous seasons in decades," yet the only accomplishment Malzahn has as a head coach (national runner up) was the result of what must be widely considered, two of the most fortuitous plays in CFB history.

In regards to winning conference/national titles, he is terrible.

In regards to drinking & driving, he is truly gifted.

I'd rank Pinkel at an 8/10, as a coach, from what I've seen of him so far.

He's seems to be more than competent in all areas that are pertinent to him doing his job.

that can't really be argued. We had an entire thread devoted to that though, no need to derail this one.

Have I disagreed or said anything to the contrary? Also what you fail to realize is that LSU's luck in 07 was a result of OTHERS helping them out after THEY had already lost. Auburn's "luck" in '13 was us WINNING in fortuitious ways. Sorry if you can't see the difference. Sure we got some breaks, but at the end of hte day we WON those games, not lost them and had to rely on others.

Also, the kick 6 wasn't luck. Not sure why people continue to say that. It was a perfectly executed play that we practiced for and put the proper personnel in for. No different than executing a proper post pattern. The uga play....yes that was luck.

I really REALLY wanted to rate him higher. What he's done with what he has is very good. However he has had some pretty bad lulls with some bad seasons in there to boot, hasn't really won anythign BIG yet, and of course...recruiting is still his responsibility as well so the fact he doesn't have elite talent does fall on him.

I don't believe we were debating if he was good or not. I know he's good. The point was to rate him and determine how good he is.
