I saw an article that referenced Sumlin coaching Drew Beledoe when he started as the JV coach at Wazzu. I also recall seeing a feed for a Nebraska JV game back when the big satellite dishes had random live feeds available.

Anybody know if your school ever had one of these, and how long ago it went away? I know freshman teams were a thing up until they could play varsity, starting in 1972, but not sure how long JV teams competed.

And, yes, I realize this sets up any number of punch lines for the current (or historical) state of A&M's program.

we did, they were referred to as the bullpups. I'm not certain but I believe when we used to play tech on Thanksgiving the JV squads would play early then the varsity would play in the afternoon.

No clue when we stopped doing that.

Alabama revived it briefly under Franchione in 2001 and 2002.

What is it exactly? Just walk-ons? A scout team? I just don't remember hearing anything like that anytime in the recent past.

Mostly walkons. But several scholarship players that hadn't played/lettered.

I went to their game against Georgia Milltary. They had 6-9 360 Bart Raulston in at RB for some plays.

When did they play? Thursday night like a high school JV? Surely they didn't play in Bryant Denny, did they?

Back before freshmen were eligible LSU had at least a freshmen basketball team. I only know this because I heard they used to sell more tickets than the varsity team when Pistol Pete was a freshman.

I remember going to see the MSU team play against a JUCO or something on a weeknight back around 93 or so. Seems like nobody knew anything about it and I don't recall how I found out they were playing. That's about all I've got.

Tennessee used to have a JV team. They last played in 2008, and didn't play any games between 2002 and 2008. I don't think FBS teams are allowed to have JV teams anymore.

They played in BDS on Thursdays and at least one Saturday the varsity was off or away. Can't remember exactly.

I don't know that they're against the rules or maybe they're sport-specific but UNC had a JV basketball team as recently as 2012.

As others have said, the rule change that made freshmen eligible was the nail in the coffin.

When I was at LSU, the freshman football team played at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

I forget how far back it was, but I know within the last 10 years or so, Troy had a JV team. I remember reading some article on the main athletics site about it. I forget who they played but I think it was Ga Military as well. The game was in Troy.

A friend of mine has an older brother who played on Auburn's JV team. He graduated from high school in 1980, so it was sometime around then. We went and watched the Auburn JV play a Ft Benning team in Columbus in the old stadium where Auburn and UGA used to play each other. Pretty cool.
