Jefferson Pilot Game of the Week: A look back

Aside from its poor production cast and undesirable matchups along with a bad time slot (11:00), why did it seem to be SEC East biased?
Seemed like Tennessee, UGA, and Kentucky were on every weekend.
Anyone else noticed this?

We laugh but there were some great games on the Jefferson Pilot games. They were even better because the announcers seemed to realize when they had a great game and ran with it.
As opposed, for example, to the sphincter clenching Ole Miss/ Arkansas game that was called by two guys who had been tripping balls and couldn't be arsed to care about the game.

Dave Dave and Dave were awesome.

There actually were numerous great games on the JP/Lincoln Financial game of the week.
The 3rd/4th string SEC game for a given week is often times still a decent matchup of good teams.

It was always either us or Mississippi State without fail.

Does anybody remember that the precursor to the early JP game was on TBS in the late 80s? I found an old VHS tape with some games and the production value was actually pretty good.

Don't forget the 3 Daves and Golden Flake.

The precursor to the jp game was indeed the tbs game. Bob Neal and Tim Foley. Started in 1984 which is the same year that espn began live broadcasts of college football. I know espns first live telecast was Florida-miami. Want to say tbs' s first telecast was georgia tech-alabama at Grant field. We had SEC football on every week which we had never had.

TBS' first game was LSU at Florida in 1984.21-21.

Didn't Jamarcus Russell throw 15 TD's in one half against Moo State in a JP game? I remember just waking up and catching the good part.

JP actually had 2 games on occasion but I don't remember that ever happening. For example, Wiki says South Carolina @ Florida and Tennessee @ Arkansas were on JP the same day in 1999.

Nothing like waking up on a beautiful fall Saturaday, taking a big bong rip, and settling in for an 11:00 kickoff watching a Dubose led Bama squad taking on Vandy.
Good Times.

Ironic that you say that about the JP-era UT teams when those same exact "bad, sleep inducing" UT teams rattled off 7 straight vs mighty bammer.

I remember watching that live. I've never seen another Hail Mary like it. Look at all the Kentucky idiots run on the field during the play.
As for Jefferson Pilot telecasts, they left a lot to be desired. Boring announcers. Crappy graphics (how do you take the score box off the screen before the game is over), no game breaks, very few scores of other games, and no studio halftime show. What sucked was when CBS had a really good game, but our local affiliate always showed the Jefferson Pilot game instead. But we did get all the basketball games too. Made Wednesday nights a little more bearable when cable was not an option.

Probably the worst called game I've ever heard

That was the year we won the SEC too. I think we had 3 other games on JP in 99.

It sucked
No it didn't. Thanks to JP we got extra football every weekend, that ESPN and CBS didn't care to televise.
