Improvements in his passing? Could it have gotten worse?

Lol now Ash, I like you but there is a big jump in a QB from one year to another. He will be pretty good behind that line plus the WR's and runningbacks .

It could have dropped to Etling levels. Lets hope that doesn't happen.

Perhaps I'm just an idiot succumbing to a troll, but I really want to know how the hell anyone could call Jalen Hurts a terrible passer. The dude threw for over 2,700 yards and 23 TDs as a true freshman. He also rushed for almost 1,000 more yards and scored 13 TDs on the ground. He accounted for 3,734 yards and 36 TDs as an 18-year-old true freshman playing QB in the SEC. That's pretty impressive anyway you slice it.

Naw, one of the best defenses of Saban's era won most of those games. Don't get it twisted.

You still have to score points to win. Alabama did that enough and by plenty in some games.

Ok, so since I don't take sides in discussions like this I will give an unbiased opinion.

It's quite possible that Hurts is a product of being surrounded by some of the best college players in football. On that I think we'd both agree.

Yes, Nick Saban led defenses put their offenses into some nice situations. Again, I think we'd both agree.

Hurts has had the O-line, RB's and receivers to allow him to flourish. I think again you would agree.

However, there is usually a big leap in a QB from one year to the next despite all of that. By sheer experience and understanding film and what defenses throw at you is HUGE.

Hurts will be a more polished and smarter QB this season by experience alone. Does not mean he wins a Heisman but he should be a much better QB.

Let me add to this by Dan Mullen from a year ago - both on Hurts and Alabama talent.

Mullen: "It's hard to simulate in practice because they have guys on their bench that nobody else even has on their roster, so you can't simulate the talent that they're putting out there on the field in practice.

-- Mullen on Jalen Hurts, whom Mississippi State was in the mix for recruiting-wise: "Not surprised that he's been able to play right away. He's a quarterback that kind of has that it factor as a leader. ... The things that kind of stood out with him that we looked at is that he's a guy with great intangibles."

Dan Mullen knows QB's, that's good enough for me right there.

Some of his mistakes were mental errors. He was also still learning to read defenses. You don't think he can fix all this and become at least a somewhat decent passer? He's already a dangerous running threat.

That's about as encouraging a thing re: Hurts as anything I have read because, as you note, Mullens is well respected as a darn good qb coach.

...you sound like a Democrat crying Russian intervention.

Here's a hint, the boy that cried wolf, got eaten in the end.

Good try though

The Nickster very pleased with improvement of passing game, particularly Hurts. He only threw four TDs today with zero interceptions. Oh, did I mention that Hurts, SEC PLAYER OF YEAR on offense, tested out at or near the top of ALL players during off season testing? Like top five forty on whole team, second best squat on whole team, top five vertical on whole team, top ten bench on whole team. What did I leave out?

But but but he played for Alabama and anyone could've done that last year.

Just curious, it seems that I read last year and Coker's year, the defenses were dominating the scrimmages partly because the format was 1's v 1's. Did the format change or is Jalen putting a hurting on the first team defense?

I think he's actually going up against the 2nd team defense. I'm not sure though

Another poster posted this: Just read a post on premium site from one of their administrators that attended the scrimmage and he said Hurts burned the backup defensive backs that were out of position and that Tua did better against the first string defense.

So basically, be careful what you wish for. If Hurts doesn't get the job done, the other highly recruited guy probably will.
