The performance of Baylor and Oregon on Saturday made the up-tempo spread offense look as faddish as the latest Free People catalog. If historians look back at this weekend as the crest of this wave, they will find a system that had the biggest impact on the offensive side of the ball since the wishbone, with the big asterisk that no one has won a national title. At its heart, the up-tempo spread compensates for what teams don't have: the ability to win the blocking and tackling battles that have defined the game for more than a century. Teams that win those continue to take home the crystal football.

I agree. It takes good DL play and you can beat those teams. A&M is proof of that, in the SEC.

Auburn HUNH with Cam Newton was a power run attack. Much different than Oregon and Baylor

To be fair, AU doesn't run a finesse style game like Baylor, Oregon etc. Plus, you have SEC athletes.

Definitely true. But it's still an uptempo hurry-up

Yeah, but I think Maisel is talking more about the Baylor/Oregon finesse game. I don't think he's slighting Auburn. It's a compliment to not be thought of that way, if anything

True. Its also funny when some of you think we run trick plays. I think we have run one trick play all year. It was on a two point conversion

You can run a high tempo, spread offense - but you must, MUST have the ability to pound a sustaining running game when needed. If you rely on a short passing game to be your defacto running game, you're screwed.

That change (short passing run game v. an actual running game) is big reason behind Mizzou's 2013 success.

So when a more "traditional offense" gets shutdown, they were just outplayed, but if it is a spread, it's because it's faddish?

Why can't it just be that Oregon and Baylor were outplayed?

To be fair Auburn did win in 2010 but only scoring 22 points. Fairley and co. and Michael Dyer were the reason they won that game. But yeah, they WERE a hurry up spread that won the BCSNC so....yeah.

Agree with all of this. But this is the rant, nitpicking and complaining is mandatory

Gus' O is up-tempo. No question about that. What Maisel is referring to are "finesse" spreads. Gus' O is power football that is all about pace. He "spreads" the field ourt very little. LSU will "spread" the field as much as Auburn does and that is considered a "pro style" O..

You need to go back and look at the 2010 schedule. Cam Newton won many of those games based on his brute strength and arm. The spread just put him in a position to be a runner. AU won a lot of close games on the last drive of the game.

You do run a lot of misdirection but I don't consider that trickery.

Auburn was 54th in plays per game in 2010. They aren't as "hurry up" as you think. Oregon was 7th in plays per game that year.

Malzhan's system is still a finesse spread though the way they run it in terms of formations and personnel even though it's a predominately a running attack. That's not a slight, but if you watch what Auburn does versus Alabama, Georgia Tech, or the old Nebraska or Oklahoma triple option teams, you can see they a significantly schematically different.
