Ten years ago there were five coaches who had won natties in the conference (Saban, Meyer, Fulmer, Spurrier, and Miles; and not to mention Tubbs season in '04). Now, there is one coach who has won five natties.

And the rest are the most ordinary, bad, average, mediocre bunch ever (jury's still out on Kirby).

This is why the SEC is slumping, no fluke that the top two big 10 schools hired former SEC coaches.

In my life time yes.

I was ask if Nick Saban is good or bad for the SEC, I said bad; as to many fans of others school think look what Nick is doing and are going why isn't my school doing as well.

This has cause good coaches to be let go of, only because they do not have Nick.

This started when Nick was at LSU.

Blaming Nick Saban because ADs couldn't accept the level that their schools were really at is silly.

The exception is Florida. Urban ran away from Saban on his own.

Saban made things so "bad" (harder for the weaker schools) that LSU convinced itself that it was a good idea to fire a NC winning coach to hire captain caveman

How many coaches in the P5 have won a national championship? I can only think of 4. ( Saban,Dabo,Fisher, and Meyer) . It's not alot to chose from. The SEC has fired good coaches with Miles and Richt. Right now, Kirby looks like a good hire but LSU made a horrible decision. Lack of great coaches and firing of good coaches have led to this.

the quality of SEC basketball coaches has gone up, but the football coaches collectively suck. That's why we have so many mediocre programs right now.

Only Les Miles was fired for losing to Saban. All of the others were fired for various other reasons. Mark Richt hadn't won the conference in ten years and Saban only blocked him from winning a conference championship one time. Urban Meyer had lost control of his football program with all of the arrests and off-field problems. Steve Spurrier simply got old and didn't want to coach anymore. Gary Pinkel had health issues. Auburn and Tennessee had been looking to get rid of Tommy Tuberville and Phil Fulmer for years well before Saban's arrival at Bama. And we all know about Bobby Petrino and Hugh Freeze. Which coach besides Les Miles was fired because they couldn't get over the Alabama hump?

I think this is the worst crop of everything the SEC has had in a long time.

A factor but not the only one. If we were losing only to Bama and being competitive with them, I don't think Les would have been fired at all. But we had blowout losses to State, OM, Bama, Auburn, and Arky (2X by 17) over Les's last 2 and 1/3 seasons.

Les was fired for more than losing to Saban, though it played a role.

The man failed to field an offense 80% of his time here. Said hed change, didnt. I see Florida fans complaining about this now with Mac after 3 years... plus the rant spent the last half of a decade telling us how bad and mediocre Miles was.. and he was on the back half.

I think that is very well said. If anything, you could make the case that Saban's "negative" impact on the SEC has less to do with who he has gotten fired than it does with who he has gotten hired. Up to this point, almost all of the Saban coaching tree guys have been not so great head coaches. Jimbo is the most notable exception, but he is in the ACC. Muschamp certainly set florida back. Jury is out on what he does at USCe, but doubtful that they rise above their traditional ceiling. Shark man in Gainesville is certainly not popular right now, looks to be on the hot seat next year, and has definitely recruited way below what Florida should be based on history and proximity to talent. Kirby looks the part in year two, but you can't really make a definitive statement until he wins an SEC title or at the very least sustains elite recruiting and on field success for more than one season.

Throw in a series of disastrous hires at Tennessee and the ascension of O at LSU, and most of the teams you count on to be the stalwarts in the SEC have dipped.
