Or have there been other eras that were better? Seems kinda like the 70's again where all the teams not named Bama are playing for 2nd place.

Absolutely

Not in terms of how good the SEC is compared to other conferences. The SEC is King and has been for pretty much the last decade. The SEC really hasn't been to this height before.

A little bit, but I don't think any other SEC team won a NC in the 70s (it was Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, etc.). In the last decade you have Florida with 2, LSU with 1 (and played for another), and Auburn with 1 (and played for another). SEC is much better than it was in the 70s (or any other decade in my opinion).

The BCS era was the golden age. This is the tail end of that era.

The 80s were strong. AU, UA, UGA, and UT could all claim a title.

Ok sorry, this is the Antimatter age of the SEC. look up Antimatter. It only goes for 62.5 trillion per gram. I'd say that beats gold pretty handily

Think it's just getting started.

Strongest fanbase in CFB.

Strongest recruiting territory.

The tier 1/2 TV contract(s) will be on par with B1G, plus the SEC Network will easily be the strongest league network. Combining these things will financially separate SEC from the rest.

Finally, now that A&M is in the SEC there is legitimacy.

It was. I think we're on the verge of seeing this "Golden Age" drop off.

2003- LSU National Title
2004- Auburn #2 finish
2005- -
2006- Florida National Title
2007- LSU National Title
2008- Florida National Title
2009- Alabama National Title
2010- Auburn National Title
2011- Alabama National Title; LSU #2 finish
2012- Alabama National Title
2013- Auburn #2 finish
2014- -
2015- Alabama National Title

I think the SEC peaked in 2011 and 2012. You had Alabama and LSU as the top two teams in the entire country.... with Arkansas in the Top 5 all in 2011. Then the next year, you had Alabama win another National Title, with Georgia and Texas A&M both finishing #5 in the AP.

The decline started in 2013 with Auburn losing to Florida State. Then Alabama lost to Ohio State in the 2014 CFB Playoff.

Sure, Bama won again in 2015... but the SEC was relatively down last year as a whole. Neither Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, or Auburn finished in the Top 20. When's the last time only two of the BIG 6 finished in the Top 20? And its not like LSU had an amazing season. They finished in the Top 15, but had 3 losses against a relatively easy schedule.

Sure Ole Miss had a decent year... but the other "next tier" teams of the SEC also struggled. Arkansas and A&M had subpar seasons.

The SEC will continue to be the nation's best conference. But the true "Golden Age" ended after 2012.

Yes, but what is undebatable is that this golden age for football in the south. Besides the Ohio State hiccup, the national championship has not left Dixie since USC won in 2004. (Heck, if you include Miami as geographically south, we haven't gone 2 years without a team from the south since Nebraska's 94-95 titles.)

Texas 05
Florida 06 08
LSU 07
Alabama 09 11 12 15
Auburn 10
Florida State 13

This part of the country has pwned the rest pretty consistently for most of recent history, especially almost the lifetime of any athlete coming out of high school.

(oh and btw, Auburn went undefeated in 2004 and was unfairly denied a shot. So throw in 2003 and you have an unbroken string of national champions from the south until Ohio State in 2014).

I don't know. Outside of 2 GREAT teams, and 2 really good teams(UGA, Arkansas), it was full of a lot of crap.

They got screwed, but I don't think you can say unfairly denied. USC, who was unfairly denied the prior year, and OU were both undefeated too.

You've incorrectly shortened the era. It should include NC's in 1992, 1996, and 1998 and second place finishes in 1995, and 1997. In the 24 years since the Bowl Coalition started, the SEC has won 12 NC's and finished 2nd 5 times.

Outside of the South I believe only 3 programs can compete USC, ND and Ohio State

Not even Michigan.

9 SEC team National titles since 2003 and 11 of the last 20 years. I'd say that's the strongest era ever. Late 50's through late 70's was also a strong era.

Yea, but doesn't 9 of 13, with 2 losses in the Championship Game sound better?(And that's not counting '04 Auburn)

In the past decade, Alabama has 4 SEC Titles and 4 NCs.
Florida has 2 SEC Titles and 2 NCs.
LSU has 2 SEC Titles and 1 NCs. (plus one in '03 and played for one in 2011.)
Auburn has 2 SEC Titles and 1 NC.

Only one of those 4 are in the Top 5 nationally in victories, have had a winning season every year, and gone to a bowl game every year - since 2006. And, this school actually has done all three not just since 2006, but back to 2000.

As a matter of fact, LSU is the only school in the country to have a winning season and go to a bowl game in 18 of the last 20 years. (won 13.)

An SEC team has won 12 of the last 25 National Titles - that's the strongest era ever for any conference. And IMHO the SEC will not be laying down any time soon. We've got the best talent in the country and some solid coaches.

No. From 1999-2002, the SEC had four consecutive weak seasons. You can't link back to the Tennessee National Title in 1998 when there were so many down years in between.

1999
Highest-rated SEC team finished #8. It was SEC Champ Alabama who also lost to Louisiana Tech that year.

2000
Highest rated SEC team finished #10. That all by itself seems unfathomable in today's era. This was a Florida team that finished with 3 losses. The next highest rated team was Auburn at #18. This is about as "down" as it gets. How could the SEC only produce one team in the Final Top 17. Has that EVER happened in any other year?

2001
While there was definite improvement compared to the low point of 2000, the SEC Champ (LSU) had a 5-3 regular season SEC record. Florida was the highest rated team, and they finished #3.

2002
Georgia won the SEC and finished #3. You might could say this was the start of the "Golden Age" of the SEC. Georgia blew it against Florida (a team that finished outside the Top 25), and had they won, would have been in a battle with Ohio State to see who could claim a spot in the National Title game against Miami. Still, Georgia did not contend for the National Title that season, and they stood as the only SEC team to finish in the Top 10 that season.... which is obviously "down".

All total, the SEC had four straight seasons without a Final Top 2 team. During this "down" four year stretch, the SEC averaged just one loan Top 7 team per season. That CANNOT be included as any "Golden Age."
