Is the SEC wrong in restricting graduate transfers inside the conference?

The NCAA does not restrict it, but the SEC does. Should that rule be changed? Should a player be able to transfer inside the SEC and play immediately?
To me, the rule makes sense, and there is an exception process if the school feels it is warranted. But I can see where the argument can be made that the "spirit of the rule" of grad transfers is that the degree is earned, the commitment fulfilled, so the player should be able to play immediately wherever he chooses. I see it, but still feel it is fair to require the play to play outside the conference or sit out a year.

If coaches can do it...

I think it's a good rule. If not, college football becomes free agency after graduation.

Once a player graduates, he should be able to transfer anywhere he wants.

I think the rule should be standardized one way or the other.

I know what you are implying here, but when it comes to the NCAA and such, the facade is focus on the student aspect first. So if you graduate, you should be free to leave.
Maybe possibly a new form of initial scholarship offer going forward should be a consideration. However, it kind of opens up that you arent fully committed to the school as a freshman

It's free agency regardless. It's just a matter of allowing those free agents to actually do what THEY want to do.
Besides, how many players involved with major programs transfer anyway? 1%? 0.5%? And then what number of those want to go in conference? The bottom line is these are a tiny amount of instances in the grand scheme of things.

I think its more along the lines as the SEC doesnt make a distinction between grad transfers and regular transfers inter conference, whereas the NCAA does make a distinction between grads and non grads in regards to transfers and waiting a year

We all know the reason. It's about winning. Everybody knows if you win the conference and conference game , you will be in the playoff. Is it right? No, he should be able to go where they desire but that's what it is.

The rule does need to be changed but not the way you suggest. The SEC needs to be the one to grant the exception and not the coach. The current system no coach who blocks a transfer can ever win. They will always look like the bad guy.

Nobody can stop him from transfering to any school he wants to continue his schooling. He just has to sit a year to play a sport in the same conference.

That is correct, if a player has graduated, they should be able to attend any other school, and receive whatever scholarship they have the aptitude for.

That's only because of Saban and Maurice Smith. If it were a player at another school that you had no allegiance to, you would be for it.

If we're going to keep pretending that these are students first, then they should be able to make their own choice among graduate school options.

How is it not already a "free agency" for transfers with eligibility?

Sure, but he's also being prohibited from going on scholarship, as I understand it.

Yes. Graduates have earned the right to go anywhere they want and play immediately.

This is a good thing, no?
