It's great to get star players to commit to your school. It's even better if they sign a letter of intent. Thank God nobody stuck a 5 star to the side of Mac Jones or Alabama might not have a starting QB at all.....

How hard is it to break a player down to build him into a team player, if the evaluators and general public keep telling him he's a can't miss player?
It's easier if you have upperclassmen that are better than the high school kids joining the team, but if you don't have that luxury the coaches have a built in difficulty as the star player knows they're gonna get to play. And if they, and/or their parent get impatient. They transfer.

I can understand how this could be a problem in theory, but it doesn't seem to be a big issue at Alabama. At this point the star "can't miss" players coming to Alabama know that there are 3 classes of older star "can't miss" players already on the roster with a leg up on them. There may be a few guys coming in that can't handle the competition but most of them seem to know what they are signing on for. The guys who want to be THE big fish in a small pond probably aren't choosing Alabama in the first place.

Alabama shouldn't have this problem. I was the best player on my HS team and was built up by alot of people, but when I went to the State All-Star game, I was humbled quickly. Everyone was the best player at their HS, everyone had confidence, and it's just another level up. At Bama there are so many 4 and 5 stars, I'm sure all of them were getting treated like kings coming out of HS. Usually with a team full of players like that, the peers on the team kinda take care of it. You'll fail with your teammates and coaches if you dont get along with teammates, or respect the upper-classmen. Some have to learn the hard way, by getting there arse beat, or if there just that good, eventual they'll be pointed out by the media for being a selfish player.

Allen Iverson syndrome. Jalen Hurts is probably THE best option for a team like Alabama looking for a run first quarterback.

Star don't mean shite once they hit campus. They're all newbie punks that have to learn the ropes and buy into the team or they won't last.

Saban is a great evaluator of talent, the star system takes into account the measurables, height, size, speed, quickness and these are talents that are measurable. Stats in high school along with awards and talking to coaches also come into play. The bottom line is BAMA get a longer first look on the players they target and not everyone is a sure thing as with other schools.

Not every kid grows up the same time and we all can name dozens of all pro players who did not get the wine and dine treatment coming out of high school but the star system works just look at BAMA 4 titles in what the last 7 or 8 years. A couple of loses in the title game. A fluke return by Auburn with 3 seconds left on a field goal attempt.
