This list has me wondering if there is nothing more to "the process," and "the standard" than recruiting the best players by any means necessary.

Saban was above average at MSU.
He had a great year or two at LSU.
He was an unmitigated failure in the NFL, and now has a dynasty at UA.

The only common theme is the number of highly ranked recruiting classes.

What say you?

It was rather mitigated. I mean they were without question improved. Miami was pretty upset to lose him

If just recruiting alone won, then places like Texas, USC, and Florida would never have the downturns they have had

Feel free to minimize it as much as you want. But you just look like a fool, and another miserable LSU fan. Meanwhile, Bama is playing for a fifth title in 8 years. That's unheard of with modern scholarship restrictions and overall tv access.

They were terrible before he got there and after he got there. They were respectable in his couple seasons. If they had signed Brees, then he'd probably still be there.

The rest of the comments are dumb. He gets great talent from recruiting but they coach them up like crazy. He makes his teams great. A lot of teams get good recruits and waste their talent.

I'm not sure what people are trying to convince themselves or others of when they post stuff like this. The guy is the hardest working and best coach at the college level.

USC had NCAA sanctions. I dont follow UF or UT but dont think they have had top 5 recruiting classes.

Could Saban have coached UW to a win over his team this weekend? I say no.

Of course he was. That's why Miami was so happy that he left.

You could have your Bama sidewalk fan pool boy raw dogging your OT 10. Probably a cuck and don't even know it.

Unfortunately, yes. Nobody wants to admit it but recruiting is a good 80-90 percent of what makes a good to elite coach. Always has been and always will be. Would Saban be elite without elite classes? Hell no. But he'd still be damned good coach and future 1st Ballot College Football HOF Coach with at least one championship to his name.

People like to forget that Bear Bryant was the worst over-signer that ever walked and to be fair it was that practice and the SEC's refusal to rein him in on it that caused Bobby Dodd to take his team (Georgia Tech) and go independent (although there were some very aggravating circumstances between the two as well like a Bama player breaking the face and damn near killing a GT player [and I'm dead serious about the severity of it - remember that pads and helmets weren't that good back then] on a play that should've never happened and was quite clearly intentional and Bear refusing to apologize for it even though even Bama papers thought he should).

The same is true of Knute Rockne at ND (those guys were secretly getting paid to play pro games for city teams) and even my beloved General Neyland (although there are few stories on it I highly doubt he refrained from bending every rule possible -- he was too brilliant not to).

EDIT - Cuz Newt Gingrich ain't Knute Rockne even tho they're both Knutes.

The guy had one loss in his second year at Bama and won a title in his third year. He won pretty big with a lot of Shula's guys. He could win anywhere if you give him a couple years. The talent is a big deal but the overall discipline is important.

Could he have won with UW's team is a silly question because their team would look different if he had been there instead of Coach Pete. I doubt he'd have a 265 pound RG getting destroyed, etc.
