Is OSU being Oversold Because They Beat Bama Two Years Ago?

Is the desire to have OSU in the playoffs largely due to wanting someone to beat Bama?
I don't think the "eye test" is enough to overcome both a head-to-head loss and a non-conference champion getting in over a conference champion (should Penn State win).

They did win the NC that year, so there is that. There's also the Meyer factor, and the fact that OSU has about eleventy billion fans.

I agree with you. If on-field accomplishment takes a back seat eye test factors, it only greases the skids for the bluebloods to continually get the benefit of the doubt. Eff that.

Because they have only lost 5 games in 5 years.

I would say no...they have 3 Top 10 wins, and went and beat Oklahoma on the road.

It's because Urban is due for another heart attack

Alabama USC is a blue blood in really good condition and Alabama beat them by 46 points.

Oh. So the college football playoffs is cumulative. I didn't know that.

Jim Delany is so full of shite. 5 years ago he almost had to be resuscitated after LSU and Bama topped the final BCS standings.

It's more about the name brand I truly believe. Don't be shocked to see Michigan or Penn St. screw Washington out of a spot. The Big 10 is the Bluest of the Blue Blood conferences just as the SEC is. Those 2 conferences run it all.

OSU is a very good team. I don't think "oversold" is the correct term here. They are only slightly higher than most people think they should be.

The problem with the Big 10 is that I and many others believe Michigan is clearly the best team in the Big 10 but they have no case to be in the College Football Playoff. They lost to Ohio State, have two conference losses and finished third in their own division. As for Penn State, Ohio State is the only team they have beaten that is currently ranked in the top 25. They're 1-2 against ranked teams and have played a very soft schedule overall. And Wisconsin has two conference losses to Ohio State and Michigan and they are only in the conference championship game because they had the good fortune of being in the weaker division. So Ohio State really does have the best case for being the Big 10 representative in the CFB Playoff even though they were unable to win their division.

Agree Bench McElroy, plus it's the way that the OSU Penn St. Game played out (Game control). OSU controlled most of the game.

It will be interesting to see where this goes if Penn St. wins today. I don't know how you can leave the team out that won the toughest division in football this year as well as the Big10 title and instead put in a team from that division that they beat head to head. Not only that, Ohio St. only got in the playoffs two years ago because they jumped Baylor and TCU due to having won a championship game that the other two didn't even have a chance to play in. That was the deciding factor for the committee that year, but this year they're going to tell us that's not as important.
I'm 99% sure Ohio St will get in because they are Ohio St. and the committee will adjust their criteria from year to year in or to justify looking out for the elite programs. I'll be okay with it this year as long as Ohio St beats Clemson.

Who would you put ahead of them?
Posted on 12/3/16 at 9:53 am to the808bass
No. The CFP Rankings are based on win/loss resumes (strength of record). Conference champion is merely one of several tiebreakers the commitee uses if teams, win/loss resumes are essentially equal.
Penn St and Wisc both already have two losses. Adding a high-quality win to their resume today still won't boost their resume enough to compensate for two losses.
If Bama and Clemson win today, the final top-4 rankings will likely not change at all.

That's a pretty good question to boil it down. I don't see anyone who can get in ahead of them.

Always has been. Respect is earned over time. Teams that always win get more respect and the benefit of doubt.
