First off, I am of the mindset that getting rid of confederate flags, then Colonel Reb and now 'Slow Dixie' is the right course of action for the University in view of the world in which we live and negative recruiting that does take place against Ole Miss.

Having said that, how long before the term "Ole Miss" is gone? There are some broadcasters that will not refer to the school as Ole Miss already.

You know in today's PC world, it is only a matter of time.

So, how long will "Ole Miss" persist?

My personal guess is 5 years on the low end as an official, school used, name...ten years max.

I like how you say "in today's PC world" like you aren't part of the problem

"Tigers" will have to go too since it was the name of a civil war unit.

And....
War Eagle
Tar Heels
Maybe Cavaliers (not sure on that one)

I'm pretty sure there are several more.

What about Jayhawks on the other side of the topic? Their uniform even has the red leggings. How do you Mizzou fans feel about that name?

We're going with Ole Piss, starting immediately. Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention.

Why is the term "Ole Miss" racist?

Rebels will prolly go next. Not that there is anything right with that.

But, the Black Bear is already in place.

The re branding of the university would cost far more than any gain from that type of move. Removing songs or a costume character is only big deals to small minded people. The name is different. Ole Miss was not the battle hymn of the confederacy or the flag of the confederacy.

If you believe Wikipedia, it's a term that slaves used to address the lady of the plantation house.

Proceed with caution though when it comes to Wikipedia.

I always thought "Ole Missed" was tragically underused as a perjorative.

It has gotten minor support from northern goofballs and a few academics.

I will never understand how honoring a failed rebellion against the current union is glorified and protected by so many especially increasing partinship views

I'm pretty sure they've eliminated it for the most part outside of athletics and the context of "school spirit".

And honestly, they've changed enough that the name itself really doesn't hold that negative connotation for most people today.

quote:

A national survey done by the school revealed most people don't associate the term with slavery or antebellum era connotations, though Epps acknowledges some faculty feel it should be changed.

I'd imagine most here are too young to remember the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement with James Meredith, much less the 1800s negative connotation with the name.
