Look what happened to UT after that debacle.

Much worse.
UT was going down the toilet at the end of Fulmer's tenure. He really had to be fired.

Firing Fulmer wasn't the problem. The hires that follow were. Lets see if LSU fricks this up

We're 2-2 with losses to two mediocre teams with a team that a lot of the media predicted to be in the playoffs. He trotted the same old tired arse ineffective offense on the field after coming within an inch of being fired last season. Stubborn is an understatement and his dismissal was a necessity.

Ohhh, let's all peer into our crystal balls and see! Why should LSU have kept beating their heads against the wall with this clown?

Fulmer needed to leave Tennessee to get enough talent to fill his roster. Not enough in Tennessee and competition with surrounding schools. He started losing that out of state recruiting battle and his edge on the field. LSU has , per capita, more talent placed in the NFL than any other state. This is shown with there being more LSU players on NFL rosters today than any other school in the country. So, it's bad if you just want to turn a profit as LSU has for a while. If you want to win titles, it's good, because Les has declined every year. He's a dinosaur that cannot change. LSU is losing now, so even if they lose with another coach, it's one step closer to finding the next right guy.

LSU has not had a losing season, and in fact hasn't had less than eight wins with miles. But it is clear that his brand of football was fading. It's better to make the move now before we start having losing Seasons like Tennessee did, like Mack Brown did at Texas. Once that starts happening, recruiting takes a hit and it's harder to build back up.

Ehhh Fulmer had the #3 recruiting class in the country in 2007, he was fired during 08 so it hadn't slipped that much
It was 23rd in the year before though
FTR, he needed to be fired

UT went a long time trying to find a coach that could turn the corner... if they have. LSU can't afford to make those mistakes. Of course talent is better at LSU. Time will tell.

Better.
We spared Miles the humiliation of having a losing season at LSU - much less two.

I like Les, but it's a good move. He had time to fix things and didn't.
Fulmer's firing wasn't the problem. Had Petrino or Gary Patterson been hired, UT would have been fine much earlier.

It might be worse.
Thing is, it would have been better had there been an obvious elite choice at hand. Tom Herman might have something good going on at Houston, but is he able to compete in the SEC? Would he be enough to keep recruits interested? I can already tell that other SEC coaches will be able to take advantage of recruiting and steering some recruits away from LSU because of the uncertainty of the program under a new coach.
So basically, LSU needs a big name guy. A coach that can compete with Saban. They would have to have an Urban Meyer-esque hire for me to be convinced that they will have something going on.

Coaching hire will be of utmost importance in my view.
