I understand the hire, you have to fill a staff and EJ is an experienced, safe, hire. I don't think that if you're playing the "better than" card game that he is even a face card.

We didn't miss out on Kirby. Kirby wanted the AU job and they chose CGM instead. Kirby actually thought he had the job.

The Kirby thing was sorta mutual. Kirby wanted the job IF we agreed to let him coach in the NC game AND discussed any NCAA issues with him.

The NCAA issues thing is sorta a joke since we don't have any right now. No idea WTF Kirby was thinking there..

The NC thing was something I can see both sides to and may have been a deal breaker.

Regardless we felt strongly enough about Gus or had too many doubts about Kirby to come to an agreement.

would have been retarded on Kirby's part if he coached in the NC game. Auburn fans would be on his arse from day 1.

At the time, wasn't the Jovon Robinson thing being looked at by the NCAA?

Not really. I din't follow all that closely as I wasn't concerned, but I remember reading about it when it first happened and decided it was a complete non-issue.

Probably because the "higher-ups" in Auburn didn't want to give full control to him like he originally wanted, which was a mistake on Auburn's part. That's why they went out and hired Gus Malzahn instead. If Kirby Smart would've gotten full control like he wanted, he would be the head coach right now.

I didn't think there was anything to it either, but if it was still up in the air and I was considering taking the job, I would want assurances from Auburn that there was nothing to it.

He was my 3rd choice behind Bobby Petrino and Gary Patterson, and my 2nd realistic choice (I didn't consider Gary Patterson a true candidate, more like a pipe-dream). Gus Malzahn was my absolute last choice out of realistic coaches. However, I will say that he's done a great job of hiring assistants and off-the-field recruiters like what Nick Saban has done.

Gary is happy at TCU. I'm curious to see what job leads him away from Fort Worth.

BMFP would have been a great hire but it was too soon after the Arky mishap.

Saban's assistants have been hit and miss as HC, but I think Smart has success written all over him.

Yeah, it seems that way. One of the reasons I wanted him was for the 4-2-5 defense and his defensive knowledge.

In 2010, I was more scared of Auburn playing TCU than Oregon. I thought they were the best overall team that year (aside from Auburn). They could've kept Auburn's defense on edge with pass/rush, instead of being just dominant at one.

That's true. Auburn could've gotten him cheap, too.
