I feel like Mullen really wants the South Florida job, but in the end may not be qualified.

What does my age make a difference, mediocre is mediocre. Whether its 2016, 2000 or 1956. If you win just over half your games, and go 4-29 against ranked opponents in your career, you should not be discussed as a top-tier or above average coach. Mullen is an average coach because he has produced average results.

Look at Tom Herman for example, was 5-0 against ranked opponents at Houston (22-4 Overall .846%) That is why we was an attractive hire this year.

Because you are taking a very narrow view. A .588 winning percentage at Mississippi State is head and shoulders better than a .750, or even .850 winning percentage at LSU, and several other schools across the country. This is true, because being the head coach at schools like Mississippi State, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and many others is not the same as being the coach at LSU, Alabama, USC, Texas, and others.

You're failure to recognize this is just that, your failure. Before Saban came to LSU, LSU was not in that group. Understanding the truth of what I've said would be easier if you weren't an LSU fan. It's like being a Yankees fan, and shitting on the quality of everyone else's players.

Mullen isn't in the same conversation with the real answer, Bill Snyder.

really, nobody in CFB is.

He begged for the Penn State job and basically became the paramour of Greg McGarity to try and back-channel his way into the Georgia gig. Who knows what other shameful things he's done to try and get out of Starkville.

yeah, you forgot Maryland. Truth is nobody really knows because agents play the media as much as universities to save face or get fat checks. Remember when Herman was coming to LSU? That was a done deal. Did Herman ever speak to LSU? Yeah, it seems each time Mullen "talked" to another school, he got a raise. What I do know because I talked to an ex Miami RB still close to the program was that Mullen did talk to them but they were not going to pay what he asked and the people choosing the next coach wanted to go to a pro style system. But hold the shameful trying to get out of starkville chat because it holds as much merit as Les Miles to Michigan or Arkansas.

He just got passed over on the Oregon job. They wanted Matt Rhule, W. Taggert, and Mullen was #3.

Maybe he just doesn't interview well. Maybe he needs a big 3 ring binder.

I think hes one of the top....5 offensive minds in college football. Always has a solid offensive game plan and they always execute it. Cant remember the last time they had a shir qb he had relf looking decent.

I think hes a poor mans chip Kelly. Or chip kelly who took the wrong job. Whay if mullen stays at Florida. He probably takes over Florida when meyer leaves and everyone is singing his praises

I guess we can agree to disagree, but just know I fully understand the way you would like me to think.

In his best year, when he had them at #1 overall, they fell off and lost two games in November, then their bowl game to Georgia Tech.

I can't reiterate enough, that he has gone 4-29 in games that matter vs ranked opponents. How do you defend that resume? I understand the gap between programs like Bama/LSU/Ole Miss, but a coach you guys claim is 2nd best in SEC, and the next big thing should be better than .138% in games vs ranked opponents based on coaching (preparation, scheme, adjustments ect).

You don't watch very many MSU games. Try watching any of their games against Alabama over the last few years and tell me how solid the offensive gameplan was. A few other stinkers in there against LSU and A&M...even Oklahoma State.

His offense is serviceable, particularly against weaker opponents. It is also designed for the QB to take a lot of hits.

So techinally LSU was only elite for a decade. 2000-2011

Have you watched Bama? Very few have executed a good game plan against Alabama.

Again, a lot of teams ahve struggled against their D.

A&M? The offense game plans have never been the problem.

even Oklahoma State.

maybe this one b/c The problem there was starting the wrong QB.

Taggert has a HC record of something like 40-45. Don't act a fool.

When the acknowledged best coach in the game was at Michigan State, his record for 5 years was 35-24-1, including 3 losses to Michigan and Penn State, 2 losses to Nebraska, Iowa, and Purdue, and losses to Wisconsin, LSU, Louisville, Stanford, Northwestern, Ohio State, Washington, Colorado State, Oregon, and Minnesota.

So what is to defend about Mullin's record? Like Saban at Michigan State, he is coaching at a lower tier college that isn't able to pull the quality and quantity of players needed to regularly compete at the highest levels of college football.

BTW, 35-24-1 at Michigan State is a .583 winning percentage, worse than Mullins at Mississippi State, and Saban wasn't competing in the hands down best division, in the best conference, in college football.

No, LSU wasn't elite until Saban came in and won a national championship, and set the program up to be an elite football school. Just like Bear Bryant at Alabama, Tom Osborne at Nebraska, Barry Switzer at Oklahoma, etc.

first, saban took over a team hit with ncaa sanctions that included scholarship reductions

second, the ncaa went to a 12 game regular season in 2006. in all your analysis in this thread, you've failed to mention this once. mullen has mostly filled up his four nonconference games against sunbelt level teams. in fact, msu has only played two p5 ooc games in mullens eight years there. (gt L, oklahoma state L). 2011 msu would have finished the season 5-6 and without a bowl if that season took place six years earlier.

third, msu's east opponent (kentucky) has the worst winning percentage of any sec team during mullen's tenure (yup, worse than vandy's). that has netted him seven of his 29 sec wins, or roughly a quarter (24%) of mullen's total sec wins are against the worst team in the sec over his tenure.

A huge percentage of those ranked teams were Top 10 and some Top 15 teams. In 2010, he lost 4 games, three to Top 10 teams and one to a Top 15 team. Playing in the SEC West will do that to you. Hard to fault a guy at MSU for losing to Top 10 teams.

There just haven't been many games vs 'middlin' SEC teams with records such as 8-4 (4-4). He has won some of those and lost some, but it's not a poor record. And of course, if he beats them, then they are knocked out of the Top 25 and he doesn't get credit for beating a ranked team.

At one point a year or two ago he was 4-2 vs teams ranked 20-25. I stopped caring about his record vs ranked teams then and stopped keeping up.

And Mullen took over Sylvester Croom's Mississippi State team, after achieving a 5 year record of 21-38, and has accumulated a record of 55-35 in 7 years, playing in the SEC West. I'd call that equal at best.

Why would I need to mention an acknowledged fact? Yes, everyone including Georgia generally stacks their OOC with creampuffs. This too is common knowledge. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Mississippi State has played more ranked opponents since 2006 than Georgia has.

If frogs had wings...

I wouldn't think an SEC East team fan would make the schedule argument. Why do I doubt that as a Georgia fan, you'd prefer a West schedule that includes Kentucky, but also Alabama and LSU every year, rather than getting them once in a blue moon, or only when you're good enough to win the East?
