He coaches in Starkville, MS. Just West of Tuscaloosa, AL and close to Ole Miss, LSU, and other strong recruiting schools. He does not have a laundry list of wins, though No. 4 A&M, No. 2 Auburn in 2014, and @ No. 9 LSU in 2014 are good ones. He wins the games he should. In that location and those facilities and finances, he has done a very fine job. Excellent coach.

I really wanted LSU to give him a look. He's a great coach.

Apparently he gives a terrible interview though.

Mullen could do very well at LSU. I don't get why he was not high on their board. Herman was never going anywhere but to Texas. Mullen should've been #2 after Jimbo, imo.

He has a terrible record against ranked opponents. But he usually slaughters the cupcakes, not named USA and BYU.

I am not in anyway saying he is a bad coach, because he isn't at all. But his biggest win is against a #2 ranked Auburn team that finished 8-5

Not really true. He rarely upsets better teams, and he rarely loses to underdogs. This year was obviously an exception, but his loss to USA was the first real "bed shitter" of his career.

His teams have sometimes looked totally unprepared against quality competition (such as the 3 losses in 2014), but those were losses to good teams.

Lol This thread comes up about every other day on this board. Mullen is a great coach of the offense and qb recruiter/developer. Everything else, he is average to subpar. Which is probably normal for a coach to have strengths and weaknesses. I could go into details but I'm not gonna, for good reason.

I see all the conjecture and false narratives being posted every time. It's like the movie, The Legacy, where you're driving around in circles, trying to find you way out. Only you're looking for insight.

Whatever makes you feel better.

He was gone to Oregon if they offered. That's just one of a few offers he's pursued.

I think he could be. I don't think Dak having the Cowboys at 11-1 right now is necessarily doing him any favors, but he was able to put a pretty good team around him.

I figure he would be considered among the best if he were at a school that recruits itself like LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, USCw, Notre Dame, etc.

I just knew LSU would take him, once Texass came calling for Herman. I think Mullen would have won championships at LSU. State may have a no compete in his contract, I don't know.

He pursued Miami and Georgia. That's not a few.

See this thread from yesterday. LINK

I am not understanding how people think he is this hidden gem? He has a .588 winning percentage and has had 4+ losses in every season except 1. Don't get me wrong, he has done a great job with what he has at MSU but what is the obsession?

He is 4-29 against ranked opponents... LINK

I'm guessing you are young, or are one of those LSU fans who think history started in 2000. Regardless, you don't remember what it's like to support a school that has to kick and scratch for every 4 star player, and only lands a 5 star when they fall in their lap.

In the decade before Saban came to Red Stick, LSU was 54-58-1, so Mullen's .588 winning percentage would have been a sizeable improvement.

Mullen isn't in the same conversation with the real answer, Bill Snyder.

He isn't in the next tier with Mike MacIntyre, either.

He doesn't even clock in at the next tier which is highlighted by pirate-enthusiast Mike Leach.

He begged for the Penn State job and basically became the paramour of Greg McGarity to try and back-channel his way into the Georgia gig. Who knows what other shameful things he's done to try and get out of Starkville.

I am surprised he couldn't back door into this job.

It's the Trump era. No one has to deal in facts anymore. You say he was "gone to Oregon", while others say he told Oregon he wasn't interested. Just believe whatever you want to believe, I guess.
