I think so. Besides Vanderbilt, Mississippi State is arguably the toughest job in the SEC. State is certainly the most difficult school to recruit to considering how many schools pluck talent out of Mississippi - not to mention, Starkville isn't exactly topping the charts as far as the college experience is concerned. Since inheriting Sylvester Croom's carnival in 2009, Mullen has averaged a shade under 8 wins a season and played in five consecutive bowl games. I think he is one of, if not the best talent evaluator in the entire country. According to Rivals, he's averaged the 31st ranked class during his tenure at State and under his tutelage 36 of his guys have seen some sort of action at the NFL level. Even though this is year 7 in the era, Dak is the first Mullen-recruited quarterback that's been implemented into his system. With a true spread quarterback Mullen can win anywhere. He was competitive with 2* Chris Relf and Tyler Russell (Who had no business being in his system)

The point I am trying to make here is that Dan Mullen would absolutely kill it at a school with upper echelon facilities and perennial recruiting abilities. He's an odd dude but the guy can flat out coach. Florida will regret passing him up. Apparently he's happy in Starkville but I think even Mississippi State fans can agree he's reached his ceiling. Who knows? He might retire there and ride out into the Oktibbeha Co. sunset, but I just can't see that happening.

I believe pound for pound, he is the 2nd best coach in the SEC behind Saban. Really like what he's done there.

He would win more than Richt if he were at Georgia

His OOC schedule really inflates his win percentage at state

And I'd win more than saban at alabama

Isn't this a game where we say things that have no actual way of being proven?

He's 46-31 at State.

Don't really see what's so special

I don't necessarily disagree, but if that's true it begs the question of why he's still at State.

I honestly kind of expected him to jump ship for greener pastures after last season.

YOu have absolutely no way of knowing that. He was a great OC, and has been a good HC at a lower tier program. Nobody has any idea how he'll do at HC of a major program.

As did I. Wisconsin would've been a great fit for him. You could look at it as State being a no-stress job where he can sit back and make 4 mill a year and everyone's happy if he can consistently win 7-8 games. He's honestly got it made

The rest is opinion.

Saban and Miles are top.

Then you've got Malzahn, Richt, Spurrier.

I think Mullen is in the next tier.

Correct. This much isn't really debatable.

He is that in a very annoying "assholish" little brother sort of way.

Malzahn has yet to prove he can develop a defense. Richt has been on the hotseat for the better part of a decade. As of now, Mullen > Spurrier. Sure, I can see how someone could put these guys ahead of Mullen but lets not act like that's an open and shut consensus

There are 3 (Saban, Spurrier and Miles) coaches in this conference that have won NC's and made it to the NC game multiple times. Malzhan took Auburn to the NC game. Pinkel and Richt have won the East multiple times. And you think the guy who hasn't made his way to Atlanta is top 3?

Not even close.

2009 Mississippi State 5–7
2010 Mississippi State 9–4
2011 Mississippi State 7–6
2012 Mississippi State 8–5
2013 Mississippi State 7–6
2014 Mississippi State 10–3

That is not top 3 coach records.

Mark Richt has had 9 ten win seasons in 14 seasons. He's finished ranked in the top ten in the AP or coaches poll in eight of 14 season. That is top 3 coach in the conference credentials.
